AS remember it The Fugs were also on the final soundtrack. They're not listed on IMDB but Ed Saunders is in the cast (as is Ornette). And "Phil Glass" was music supervisor. Perhaps he's responsible for rejecting Ornette's music. Quote

I remember almost nothing about it, which may say something about my memory, but probably says more about the film. I do have a double LP of Ornette's soundtrack, and that IS memorable. I see this item off and on in some of the secondhand stores here. Next time I catch sight of one more copy, I'll grab it and have it on the auction block.
