Man with the Golden Arm Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 Just Googled up the second coming of the ever Bev-er popular Gilles Peterson Series. Due to the UK on June 21 I found the track listing and it's as follows: Impressed With Gilles Peterson: Volume 2 1. Starless & Bible Black- Stan Tracy 2. Metropolis (Part IX)- Mike Westbrook 3. Will You Walk A Little Faster- Neil Ardley 4. Ursula- Michael Garrick Septet 5. A Street In Bombay- Amancio D'Silva [Previously Unreleased Exclusive] 6. The Hipster- Harold McNair 7. Boom Jackie Boom Chick- Paul Gonsalves 8. Tribute To Mike Taylor - Timewind-Featuring Norma Winstone [Previously Unreleased Exclusive] 9. Don't Fall Off The Bridge- Tubby Hayes And Paul Gonsalves All Stars And... Gilles Peterson goes to Brazil... ...you tell me? Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 (edited) I know the first three tracks - the Tracey is a really beautiful, smokey ballad that opens the Under Milk Wood Suite (I assume it'll be the original Bobby Wellins version); the Westbrook an absolutely exquisite Harry Beckett feature piece...it's like a quiet coda to the full suite (it'll be nice to hear this remastered properly - the 1999 CD reissue was one of the worst botch jobs I've heard - horrible wow!); the Ardley marvellously quirky. After that I'm into intriguing unknown territory! Even better news is that the long promised reissue of some of the full albums is coming closer, if this months Jazzwise is to be believed. There's a full discussion of this over at the 'other place' under a Don Rendell/Ian Carr thread. Edited May 7, 2004 by Bev Stapleton Quote
Philip Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 "Other Place?" I thought it cloosed when the lease ran out. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 (edited) I was, of course, referring to the House of Lords! Anyone interested in the full releases should check that thread. The first reissues are scheduled for June with more in the Autumn. Roger Farbey, who knows far more about this music than I do, keeps in contact with the labels and has posted the details he's just received. Very good news. Edited May 8, 2004 by Bev Stapleton Quote
sidewinder Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 (edited) I was just listening to Volume 1 of the Peterson and it continues to impress (sorry for that..). Interesting line up for Vol2 - the Tracy/Wellins and Westbrook are the only ones I'm familiar with. I assume that the Garrick is from one of his mega-rare Argo albums and that the McNair is from one of his equally rare RCAs (either 'Harold McNair' or 'Flute & Nut' I guess). On paper it doesn't look quite so strong as Vol 1 but I hope I'm proven wrong. Incidentally, I've heard some very negative comments re: the quality of vinyl pressings for Vol 1 (I have it on CD but was thinking of picking up a vinyl copy as it has the Westbrook 'Original Peter' as a bonus track). Any feedback out there concerning the quality? Edited May 8, 2004 by sidewinder Quote
David Williams Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 The vinyl is OK - varies from track to track, but I think that may be more to do with the quality of the tapes used. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted May 9, 2004 Report Posted May 9, 2004 The Garricks are apparently in line for the full reissue treatment, including the Argos. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted May 9, 2004 Report Posted May 9, 2004 impressed #1 is worth buying? it is kinda expensive here in new york but it looks interesting. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted May 9, 2004 Report Posted May 9, 2004 Its a marvellous collection of mainly 60s UK jazz. Peterson is a UK DJ who seems to work with a 'hip' young crowd. Alongside modern stuff, soul etc he throws in jazz and has developed an interest of his own in this period. The CD is a mixture of exciting, up-tempo pieces with a strong rhythm, pieces that he's found go down well with the jazz-dance crowd; and more reflective pieces. I came into UK jazz in the 70s so the music on the disc was legendary stuff I'd not heard before. Many people with no interest at all in UK jazz have been taken aback by the music on this disc. As I've suggested above it seems to have kick started a revival of interest and a reissue programme. The Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet tracks caused so much interest that all their discs have just been reissued for the first time in 30 years. I'd recommend Impressed I - it's been one of my most played discs for the last year. Might sound different to non-UK ears. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 10, 2004 Report Posted May 10, 2004 One of my faves too over the past year and it gets lots of listening. Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted May 10, 2004 Author Report Posted May 10, 2004 One of my faves too over the past year and it gets lots of listening. ...and it has a sonically speelendeed take of the frantically bounceable title cut from your obelisk-arific avatar and the only palce to get it on disc! and btw the (short and all i've heard) track "Ursula" from Michael Garrick is an outstanding modal Guaraldi-ism that would sit very well if the Peanuts gang crossed the sea. sidewinder Posted May 10, 2004 Report Posted May 10, 2004 Very true re: the Garrick. 'Peanuts With Attitude' sums it up nicely..Great track ! The Harry Beckett 'Rolli's Theme' has to be my fave though. I didn't hesitate to pick up the recent CD issue of this one, which is absolutely A1. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 The five initial 'Impressed Repressed' reissues are now being advertised in the UK magazines alongside Impressed 2: Mike Taylor Trio - Trio Michael Garrick - Troppo Amancio D'Silvia - Integration Neil Ardley, Ian Carr, Don Rendell - Greek Variations Mike Westbrook - Celebration. Please everyone go and buy one copy ove each. That way we're more likely to get the next five!!!! Quote
sidewinder Posted June 5, 2004 Report Posted June 5, 2004 (edited) No sign of 'Impressed II' or its siblings yet. Any idea of when they are due out? It'll be nice to get the chance to hear "Greek Variations" without having to take out an IMF loan for the priviledge.. Edited June 5, 2004 by sidewinder Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted June 5, 2004 Report Posted June 5, 2004 HMV online has both Impressed II and the 5 reissues slated for 21st June. However, they've been listing Impressed II for some time and kept moving back the dates...I seem to recall April 1st being the initial date!!!!!! (clearly some wag in the offices!) The fact that there are half-page colour adverts in the press would suggest that this time its real. I'd imagine there'll be some sort of high profile campaign in the shops that sell jazz. I'm just hoping they keep it going long enough to get all those Garricks out. The history of UK jazz reissue series seems to parallel some of those magazine partworks that do so many issues and then give up for lack of interest. Let's hope Impressed has generated enough interest. Quote
P.D. Posted June 5, 2004 Report Posted June 5, 2004 (edited) These are all listed as available via CRAZYJAZZ I use them a lot for getting British issues. Not the cheapest but have proven to be most reliable and have more complete lists of what is available. On the Impressed 2.. these tracks are all quite rare, I hope that interest opens the doors for the Gonsalves, and the Gonsalves Hayes recordings as well as the British bands.
