ornette Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 I've just purchased the reissue of this on Atlantic Jazz Masters (73751). The piano sound is terrible. Very distorted in places. Although the cd is stamped 04/04 the playing side has a very 'old fashioned' look with a clear band round the outer edge (this is a very short cd). No remastering claims are made on the sleeve. Does anybody have the lp, for comparison? Quote
brownie Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 Many Atlantic albums of the Nirvana era (early 60s) suffered from mediocre sound. The Herbie Mann/Bill Evans date was one of the victims of this. I have the original LP and it never sounded good. Wouldn't call Evans piano sound terrible but it is definetely off. I'm not a great fan of that session and never bothered to check a CD reissue. Bluerein Posted May 9, 2004 Report Posted May 9, 2004 I had the old Atlantic Warner CD issue of this session and it was in mono. he newer Koch edition is stereo (at least partly) but not and improvement in sound quality. Is the new Atlantic Jazz Masters version Stereo or Mono? Do you know what others are in the new batch? Thanks, Reinier Quote
bebopbob Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 The recent European reissue is an improvement over the US KochJazz edition but still not great. Perhaps Bill Evans was poorly miked during the first session in 1961. To me, it sounds like Atlantic used the mono masters which may suggest the improvement in sound. Quote
