sidewinder Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 Mine arrived a few hours ago... but I wasn't here... Just to recap: ordered Monday afternoon, arrived Wednesday afternoon ... in UK! Wow ! Maybe I'll see mine tomorrow? Quote
Aggie87 Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 who got the highest number? i ordered saturday, and mine arrived today number 3134. #3148 was sitting on my front porch when I got home today Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 I enjoyed pretty much all of the EJ Mosaic, but since I already owned a big chunk I didn't buy it... Quote
allblues Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 I ordered it in time 2-3 weeks ago, but haven't received it yet. I just hope it doesn't get lost on the way! I ordered it Friday and have the same fear. I hope they didn't put the defective booklet in these last minute orders. I bought mine a couple weeks ago. The booklet was missing some pages, but they're sending a replacement. Quote

David Ayers Posted May 27, 2014 Report Posted May 27, 2014 Ten years on (and all of us older and wiser) does anyone have fresh thoughts on this material? Quote
erwbol Posted May 27, 2014 Report Posted May 27, 2014 Really enjoying this Elvin set. Not that I'm hugely concerned but I was puzzled to note that the "Lighthouse" sessions on discs 7/8 are mastered from 16-bit mixes where as the rest is 24-bit. Wonder why , were the original tapes lost after the session came out on CD in 1990 ??? I'm not bit-mad but the live material does sound a little flat although perfectly acceptable- I presume that's more to do with the way it was recorded rather than the digital transfer. The recent Japanese BNLA999 reissues luckily do not sound flat (listening to volume 1 now) and are advertised as 24bit on the obi. Have you been able to compare them? Ten years on (and all of us older and wiser) does anyone have fresh thoughts on this material? It took me while to warm to the Lighthouse albums. That could be simply down to having so many other new CDs to listen to. I find Mr. Jones still a bit underwhelming. I have higher hopes for the earlier studio albums, a lot of them being available as SHMs now. I'll get to those later this year. Quote
Eric Posted May 27, 2014 Report Posted May 27, 2014 (edited) Ten years on (and all of us older and wiser) does anyone have fresh thoughts on this material? Wow, has it been that long? Aside from a couple of the earlier records, this music was previously unknown to me. With the exception of the Lighthouse material (which I simply have not listened to), I have really come to enjoy the set. Tunes are interesting and great playing all over the place. Classic Mosaic "discovery" for me. Edited May 27, 2014 by Eric Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 27, 2014 Report Posted May 27, 2014 I enjoy the later studio material a lot more now than when I first got the set. Essentially disks #5 & #6 (presuming the Lighthouse material is disks #7 & #8). I really need to spin this whole set more offen too, I'm realizing. Quote
mjzee Posted October 6, 2014 Report Posted October 6, 2014 Is the track Mr. Jones identical on the Poly-Currents and Mr. Jones albums? Quote
erwbol Posted October 6, 2014 Report Posted October 6, 2014 And wasn't Poly-Currents released not too long after recording? I think the title track of Mr. Jones dresses up an otherwise pretty poor album. I have the SHM of Poly-Currents under way from Japan. The Ultimate on SHM was excellent. Quote
mjzee Posted October 6, 2014 Report Posted October 6, 2014 I've been going through the Elvin Mosaic box (bought as a download through iTunes). It's been very pleasing; surprisingly eclectic, strong compositions, nice arrangements. Quote
mikeweil Posted October 7, 2014 Report Posted October 7, 2014 What I really love about the Elvin Jones Blue Note sessions is his frequent addition of a conga player and percussionists to the band - and good players, like Candido, who really anchored Elvin's wailing solos. That multi-percussionist album, one of his last, with Omar Clay and others, Jan Hammer and Gene Perla, is a cherished favorite of mine. Quote
king ubu Posted August 21, 2020 Report Posted August 21, 2020 Hm, taking this off the shelves to check out Grossman again ... and not sure if I ever asked for a replacement booklet, as mine runs from pages 3-14 only and misses the beginning of the liner notes and the entire discography part ... that sucks, but I guess it's a bit late now. If anyone with a correct booklet could scan pp 1/2 and 15/16 for me, that would be terrific! Quote

There are full scans on Discogs, but too small to read ... I shot Mosaic an e-mail, too, but it's been OOP so long (I've got the bill in my box, September 2006 - I guess that's when it went OOP). Quote
Clunky Posted August 21, 2020 Report Posted August 21, 2020 I'd be happy to help if Daniel has any problems. I recall copying the Morgan 50s set booklet for someone here but struggled to get it work properly using an A4 flat bed scanner. In the absence of an A3 copier i ended up photographing the pages with a macros lens... Quote
king ubu Posted August 21, 2020 Report Posted August 21, 2020 I've had access to A3 scanners at work for a while (and still do) - so if I can return the favor ... Quote
Daniel A Posted August 21, 2020 Report Posted August 21, 2020 I only have an A4 scanner at home, so you might want to do some pasting. Would you prefer jpg format? 🙂 Quote

The studios sessions are presented in chronological order, followed by the live Lighthouse session, which occupies the two final discs. For the sake of repeated listenability, the already lengthy Discs Seven and Eight do not include the stage announcements or the audience singing "Happy Birthday" to Elvin Jones, which appeared on the original double LP issue. The out-of-phase sound on the drums on "Simone" (Disc Four, track three) is on the only surviving tape of this performance. The peak clipping of the bass drum at two points on "For All The Other Times" (Disc Four, track five) is in the original recording. Quote
king ubu Posted August 21, 2020 Report Posted August 21, 2020 Thanks to y'all!  Regarding "Mr. Jones", well, they needed a few more minutes to beef it up to LP length, I guess. Btw, this must be one of my favorite Grossman moments:  About to finish my listen to discs 5-8 - terrific music, both on the studio dates (those last ones that weren't released until a few year later, are really, really good!) as well as at the Lighthouse - but I really tend to favor Liebman for musicality ... better tone, more interesting delivery, generally. His ballad feature (from the Lighthouse recording) is great as well:  Quote
