Hardbopjazz Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 I may be going on some training in Chicago. Are there any good jazz clubs o check out when I'm there? Quote
jlhoots Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 Yes there are. Pick up a copy of the Chicago Reader for a good listing. Where you'll go depends on what you want to hear. Quote
mgraham333 Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 The Jazz Showcase is great. I've been there a few times. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 Is "The Bop Shop" still around?? I was only there once, to hear a friend's quintet play. (I should probably say "friend", up until that point I only knew the guy on-line, on a music-board similar to this. FYI, a trumpeter named Jeff Beer.) Anyway, is The Bop Shop still around?? The Bop Shop 1807 W. Division Street Chicago, IL The one time I was there must have been in about 1991 or 1992. Quote

sal Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 Like jlhoots says, check the Reader. Its online at www.chicagoreader.com. Click on the music link, then the jazz link for a complete listing of jazz for the upcoming days/weeks. The Jazz Showcase is the classic place, but not to be missed is the Green Mill, which was Al Capone's old hangout, and Fred Anderson's Velvet Lounge. Plus, there's always jazz at nice venues that are not necessarily jazz clubs, but great places nonetheless. Also, I hear Green Dolphin Street is a really nice place, but I've never been there. Quote
Larry Kart Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 For avant-garde type doings, the Reader listings can be spotty. Try here for further info: http://www.restructures.net/chicago/music.htm That scene is very strong and quite varied in Chicago now. If you're interested and need specific recommendations for a particular week from among a bunch of unfamiliar names, let me know and I'll tell you what I know. Quote
jazzypaul Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 The Reader is a great idea. So is just going to the Green Mill, Pops for Champagne, Pete Miller's or the Jazz Showcase on virtually any night of the week. The bang for the buck value goes to Wednesday nights at The Empty Bottle. $1 Amber Bocks (not a good beer, but a fantastic $1 beer) and the Vandermark 5, when Ken's in town. Or Tuesday nights at Michael's for the Paul Abella Extra Large Duo... Quote
catesta Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 Andy's 11 E. Hubbard St. You might catch Von Freeman there. Quote
kh1958 Posted April 17, 2017 Report Posted April 17, 2017 Is there a publication or a website (similar to New York City Jazz Record or bigapple.com) that has a fairly complete listing of upcoming jazz events in Chicago, or collects links to most of the jazz venues in Chicago? Quote
