Vincent, Paris
Apart from Beehive (or was it Bee Hive?), are there that many jazz catalogues which haven't been reissued still on CD (or a few albums only) ? It seems to me that almost every major one has been (if not completely) somewhere in the world, Japan, US, or Europe. Any thoughts? I think there's been a thread on that topic already but couldn't find it.
Stefan Wood
There are a lot of albums on Muse that deserve to be reissued. As well as Onyx and Xanadu, though some have come out on High Note.
jazzbo
Plenty of material on labels that haven't been reissued as Stefan notes (I'd love to see Warner Bros. fifties and sixties material, and Black and White sessions, among others) and there are a lot of small labels that have not been reissued at all or hardly at all. . . . Philip
Plenty of Ogun, especially all those Mike Osborne albums John "Vinyl freak" Corbett mentions in the May issue of Downbeat. Stefan Wood
Lon which Black and White sessions haven't been reissued? I recently came across a fair amount of cd Black and Whites from artists like Buddy Tate, Jimmy Witherspoon, Sonny, Stitt, Eddie Davis, Ray Bryant, etc. etc. Edited April 30, 2004 by Stefan Wood

sidewinder
Quite a few of the Master Jazz sessions have still to come out on CD. The Julian Dash for example.
Chuck Nessa
In the early cd era Pickwick issued a bunch of Black and White masters in a series of anthologies. I never picked any up because of an allergy to anthologies.
jazzbo
How about: Broadway Intermission? Choise? Fat Cat? Dream Street? Horizon? Improvising Artists? Incus? Inner City? Merry Makers? Metronome? PM? Palo Alto? Pumpkin? Some of these may have had a few cd releases. . . but. . . .
jazzbo
Yes Chuck, I have an aversion to anthologies too. . . though in this case the Pickwick way made sense as they lumped together a lot of clarinetists for instance that didn't make enough 78s for a disc of their own. . . . I mentioned the Pickwick releases in passing at the top of my message.
Guest akanalog
JAPO- i think ECM has been ignoring issuing most of the JAPO albums on CD. at least here in america i have never seen any i don't think.
Stefan Wood
You know what, I was thinking of the French Black and White (or is it Blue?) label. Still though. I have a 4 cd set of Jack McVea material that covers (I believe) ALL of his 40's material. I love this guy's playing -- he sounds a lot like Coleman Hawkins. This was reissued by Blue Moon (aka Fresh Sound Spain).

jazzbo
Yeah, I know. . . it's all PIRATE STUFF! Here we go again. . . . As I said, a lot of it has been out, but not officially and not comprehensively.
Stefan Wood
The thing is, what American company would put McVea's stuff out? Complete?? The sound is very decent. I've also been eyeing the Tiny Grimes, which is from the same series......
jazzbo
Hey, I'm not going to get deep into the arguments either side of the pirating labels! I agree, both that McVea is a KILLER player (love him on the T-Bone sides et al and all the way into his fantastic arranging and production work for B. B. King et al) and that there is not likely to be any company that would put the stuff out. Mosaic, maybe. . . . in ten or fifteen years. The Grimes material. . . I don't have that series, but I do have the three Gotham Grimes that were put out by Collectibles Records, the stuff with Bird, etc. which is the bulk of the Blue Moons. . . . Great stuff, you'd likely dig a lot of it. Golson and other jazzers appear. . . .
Stefan Wood
Cool about the Grimes. My thing is, if the McVeas are pirated, from whom did they do the deed? I have to admit I am ambivalent about the Fresh Sound/Discomforme etc. discs, especially when they come up with stuff that NO ONE has reissued yet. The Roy Brooks is another example. But in the case where they ripped off Nessa's Mingus cd, I can't support that. I would put my money into Nessa's label any day for reissues, as opposed to buying a cheaper import copy. jazzbo
Agreed one hundred percent. Doesn't stop me from wishing that Mosaic would do a Complete Black and White box a la Commodore . . . !

Palo Alto albums are now officialy reissued by QuickSilver Records Improvising Artists are also available, at least on-line. All the Incus catalogue probably isn't available on CD but many references are presented on Incus records website (and some Lps still available). mikeweil
Yes it was, like LPs by Sonny Stitt. Don Schlitten bought his productions for reissue on Muse, the rest belongs to Buddah, which reissued some Norman Connors LPs on CD (Herbie Hancock and others participating).
