We seem to always talk about the men, which yes, makes up the bulk of jazz musicians, but what about the woman? Most woman jazz musicians that have left their mark were singers. What about the ones that played instruments?

Mary Lou Williams. Art Blakey said she taugh him stuff when he played with her.

Jutta Hipp. Well she didn't record much, but she played a mean piano.

Any others to add to the list?

With all due respect, patricia, I cracked up when I saw your categories-

"singers" and "musicians". It's just an old joke, you know, singers aren't musicians......... ;)

Hey, don't forget Lee Wiley and Marion McPartland! In terms of influence, both have been huge, one a long time ago...and the other a long time ago, a shorter time ago, now, and hopefully for a long time into the future!

Alexander, I dig Rosnes' playing too. How 'bout Geri Allen, folks?

You take the combined books of Carla Bley, Toshiko Akiohi, Mary Lou Williams, Geri Allen, Joanne Brackeen, Bertha Hope and Michelle Roseman/Rosewoman, and you got some tunes to last you for a while.

Some MEATY Tunes.

I saw a video where Mary Osborne tears through 'The Man I Love' with Billie Holiday in rapt attention. It's obvious Mary was a killer player based on this performance alone. Too bad I can't find any of her records.

Lynne Arriale

Perhaps I had so high expectations but i was underwhelmed by her greatness when I saw her last summer. It was a polished and gleaming performance lacking much in the way of originality and verve. Stylistically she seemed all over the place as if keen to show off her versatility and influences.

Way down the shallow end.... sorry

It's just my opinion, but I never heard a greater musician than Billie Holiday.

Thank you Maren and you too, Paul. INSTRUMENTALISTS does describe what these ladies do, better than my designations.:D
