Dave James Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 I have a friend here at work who's seriously into Anthony Braxton. He told me yesterday he'd heard that Leo Records was going to release a 4 CD box set of Anthony Braxton playing standards. Has anyone heard anything about this? Up over and out. Quote
7/4 Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 http://www.leorecords.com/ I have heard about this, but couldn't find anything on the labels web page. Quote
Matthew Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 I'm of two minds about this possibility. Anything by Braxton that I have, I love. However, I just think Braxton is a much better player when he does his own compositions, he just has an added fire to his playing with his own music that is missing with standards. Who am I kidding though? I'd pre-order this set in a minute! Quote
JSngry Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Braxton doing standards can be quite good, or quite not-so-good (those awkward Magenta sides come to mind). I'd very much like to know who the band will be (if there even is one!). But I'm defintiely interested! Quote
JohnS Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Braxton's done standards before on two Magenta lps. Interesting with the Hank Jones, Rufus Reid, Victor Lewis rythm section. Not a real meeting of minds though and not a lot happens. There were also some standards recorded for Steeplechase if my memory is correct. If anything the quintet where Braxton leads from the piano is his most effective standards set. Quote

I can't remember how I thought it was, though, but it did certainly not blow me away. ubu Quote
JohnS Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 They are the ones Flurin, didn't he play bass clarinet, or maybe contra bass on some of those? Quote
DTMX Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 This was a nice set: Anthony Braxton Quartet "8 Standards (Wesleyan) 2001" A 2-disc set recorded live at Wesleyan University in April 2001. The quartet features Anthony Braxton (sopranino, soprano, alto saxophones), Kevin O'Neil (electric guitar), Andy Eulau (bass), and Kevin Norton (drums, glockenspiel, percussion). Includes Airegin, Escapade, Nuages, Someday My Prince Will Come, Why Do I Love You, Pujab, Duke Ellington's Sound of Love, and Lullaby in Rhythm. Quote
BeBop Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 I've got the Steeplechase LPs (In the Tradition I and II). I enjoy them, though probably as much for the novelty as for the music. Not that they are bad, but they don't appear to my 'usual' desire for swing. And not that they don't swing; they do, in their own, distinctive manner. Not your father's swing. Quote
7/4 Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Now I remember where I saw this: Jazzmatazz Anthony Braxton - 23 Standards - 4 CDs (Leo Records) — standards But no release date! Quote
7/4 Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 I talked to a buddy of mine who has a store in the East Village. He didn't know anything about it, but suggested emailing Leo, says he's very good at responding. Quote
