wesbed Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 (edited) I know there are some new RVGs being released this summer. I know Mosaic has announced some up-and-coming releases in future months. But, hey, it's Tuesday! Today. I go to my local Border's store every Tuesday and/or Wednesday evening to see what I can find. To learn what was just released/available that I didn't know about. To try to eye any new packaging that doesn't appear to be something I noticed the previous week. If I were to make my way down to my local Border's, Tower, Barnes & Noble, Virgin, local jazz shop, or pick-your-choice store, what should I be looking for? What issues/re-issues should be in the bins THIS Tuesday. Yeah, I realize that Border's might not have the new stuff on the shelves till Wednesday. Still, I can go look, wish, and dream... can't I? What should I dream about? What might I find on store shelves? What will 'you' be looking for at the music stores today? What have 'you' seen? Post 'em here (so I'll know what to spend my money on). Well, I do know that regardless of whatever is posted at Jazzmatazz, very little of this will be at my Borders. If I am lucky, it is sitting on some cart and will be stocked by the weekend. At one time I would actually browse said carts, looking for new issues. I would typically be quized by an employee, usually with a snotty overtone. (Sadly) I have found Amazon and CD Universe to have much better attitudes and prices Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 (edited) Free For All and I drove around town to like 5 different places last October, looking for Andrew Hill's "Passing Ships" on the Tuesday it was released. Never did find the damn thing, and it took me until Thursday to find one place in town that actually had it in stock. Streetside used to get a moderately decent number of new releases in on Tuesdays, but ever since that outfit in New Jersey bought them up, their "non-pop/non-rock/non-hip-hop" new releases are slim to none most Tuesdays (so I don't even bother going in there but once every month or two). And I don't think they even get any new Classical releases any more either, the bastards. Took me two or three weeks to find some place in town that had a particlar new Naxos release last fall too (I wasn't going to pay $3 in shipping for a $6 or $7 CD, buying it on-line). What the hell's going on when most new Naxos titles are suddenly special-order items??? I remember when every Naxos title came in on the Tuesday they were released - usually two or three copies each, per store. And, nearly every new CPO release too. OK - back to jazz. It took Streetside months to get in the last round of Rare Groove BN titles, and they've only gotten about half of the RVG's released in the last year. (On release day, they would get like only three of the six new RVG's that were due out that day -- and never get the other three.) WTF??? And I don't think Streetside ever got any of the Conns from last October either, not any of them. Gotta get everything on-line, anymore. Edited April 27, 2004 by Rooster_Ties Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Streetside's classical stock has been cut to the bone. I think they're down 75% in classical inventory at the Westport location, and I'm sure the Overland Park location is down 50% too (not that they were all that big to begin with). And the jazz room at Streetside in Westport is down 50% in inventory too, and they aren't getting shit in terms of new releases much -- barely 20% or 30% of what they used to get. I guess Borders and B&N are the only decent source of classical CD's in KC, and frankly -- I would say both are only half-way decent (at best). Basically, there's no place left in town that's worth brousing any more, for jazz or classical CD's (new or used). Maybe Music Exchange, for used titles (95% of their CD's are used), but that's really about it. And their inventory doesn't change frequently enough to make anything more than monthly visits necessary. I know, I'm off-topic talking about used CD's, but the difference between what St. Louis has in Euclic Records and Vintage Vinyl (and their relatively INCREDIBLE used CD offerings ), and what KC has (which isn't shit any more ), is like night and day. How can St. Louis have TWO stores wish such GREAT 'used' CD sections?? - where in Kansas City I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel just to even find one or two discs per store that I'm even half-way interested in??? 'Tis a puzzle. Quote
GA Russell Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 I received in the mail yesterday two from Concord which go on sale today. Both are compilations. One is called Cha Cha Soul, which I haven't listened to yet. All songs are latin. The other is called Mood Indigo, and is one of the Jazz Moods series. All the songs are either bluesy or melancholy. Half are vocals. A good safe gift to give to an adult whose musical tastes you aren't quite sure of. Quote
Eric Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Rooster, you have nailed the KC scene. And I don't get the KC/St. Louis disparity either. Unless it is true that we really are just a cow town My favorite place for jazz is Receycled Sounds in Westport, but it is almost all lps. They do get some really cool stuff in there - it seems that people who unload/trim their collections prefer to go there over Music Exchange. I used to go to Pennylane and Music Exchange all the time. Now I rarely do. It is kind of sad, but it just became a waste of time. BTW, the Streetside in OP is now closed. I really think the internet has contributed much to the demise of the local record stores, at least in KC. And generally speaking, a relatively conservative listening crowd. It is all rahter sad ... although I am hopeful that some well-heeled capitalist will one day remedy the situation, a la Euclid or Dusty Groove in Chicago. Unil then, "buy it used" at Amazon, half.com (and sometimes GEMM or ebay) meet my needs pretty nicely. Eric Quote

Anyone have any information? This CD is listed as a 2001 release from Neon Tonic Records on the Tower website. I know that this has actually been released (I was able to get my hands on a promotional copy), but I am positive that it was withdrawn due to legal problems stemming from inclusion of the Sinatra track. My copy has the Concord stamp and indicates that it was marketed and distributed by Concord Records, Inc. The Sinatra track is "All Of Me", and dates from 1978. The Ellington tracks are "Take The 'A' Train" and "Creole Love Call", both dating from around 1970. The Keely Smith tracks are "Misty" and "Be My Love", and date from 1968. There are also tracks by Sammy Davis, Jr. (2), Andy Williams (2), Lena Horne (2), and Ann-Margret (1). Quote

NOW I remember the news of a couple of years ago of the discovery of tapes made by an employee of Caesar's Palace and the wrangling over ownership of same. the Neon Tonic label was then formed by Norman Lear's Act III Communications for the production of these gems. Gee! What a surprise that the Sinatra Clan would make the most noise! Quote
