Guest Chaney Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 Mal Waldron & Steve Lacy Live At Dreher Paris 1981 (Hatology) 2003 Limited edition 4-CD set recorded live on August 10, 13, 14 & 15, 1981 at Dreher, Paris. The equality, the almost perfect balance in complement and contrast, of the musical collaboration between Steve Lacy and Mal Waldron was palpable in both its internal and external workings … These four CDs, captured live in Paris in 1981, are notable as the first documentation of their performances as a duo, a particularly felicitous exploration of common interests and uncommon talents, initiating an intermittent series of duo recordings that would span thirteen years, varying repertoire, and several labels, but never venture far from the groundwork that was established here. — Art Lange END A reissue of: HatArt CD 2-6172/2 Steve Lacy & Mal Waldron Live At Dreher Paris 1981, Round Midnight Vol.1 HatArt CD 2-6186 Steve Lacy & Mal Waldron Live At Dreher Paris 1981, The Peak Vol.2 This one now seems to be available from THE JAZZ LOFT for the very reasonable price of $32.99. Any comments / opinions as to the music contained on these disks? Quote
John L Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 I'm a fan of Waldron and Lacy and I have these disks. For some strange reason, I have never been as fond of them as I am of many of their other collaborations. Quote
Guest Chaney Posted May 1, 2003 Report Posted May 1, 2003 (edited) $30 from Cadence. Be mindful though: That's $30 plus shipping and handling; non-subscriber fee; New York State sales tax (for us New York Staters); and the long distance phone call to place the order as these folks have yet to FULLY enter the Internet age. That's $30 + $6(!) + $2.50 + $2.10(?) + $.50(?) Final cost? $41.10 The Jazz Loft: $35.99 (Weren't Internet sites in the time of the Flintstones more advanced than that of Cadence?) I respect your opinion even though I disagree (that's what makes for different record collections). Just curious - what Lacy/Waldron collaborations do you like better? You may recommend something I'd like to hear. Thanks. Quote
John L Posted May 1, 2003 Report Posted May 1, 2003 Paul: Part my problem might be that I tend to enjoy Waldron more when he is playing off of a rhythm section. Of the Lacy/Waldron collaborations that I know of, One Upmanship is probably my favorite. In general, I think that what they recorded together on Enja is quite good. Lacy's early album with Waldron, "Reflections," is nice as well. The "Super Quartet at Sweet Basil," is also good, if not spectacular (IMO). John Quote
jlhoots Posted May 1, 2003 Report Posted May 1, 2003 I don't work for Cadence - but, I'm a subscriber, I don't live in New York state, I wouldn't make a long distance call to order, & I'd probably order some other items. You could order 6 more CDs for $1 more in shipping. Actually I've ordered from Jazz Loft & Cadence in the past. Never had any problems with either. Oh well - if you like the music buy it from wherever. Quote
Guest Chaney Posted May 1, 2003 Report Posted May 1, 2003 Oh well - if you like the music buy it from wherever. Very true. The folks at Cadence are really very nice and I have found their service to be excellent. The price of ordering just tends to bring out the ranter in me. My apologies. Quote

Shrugs - Thanks for the info. I'd wondered if there was any additional material on the cds. Didn't expect there to be less. I'm hanging on to my lps - even if they didn't have the extra track, they sound better than I could imagine any cd sounding. Quote
David Ayers Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 I don't have the LPs but I do have the CDs (at that amaz-ing price;)) - but there is so much material on them I don't understand HOW it can be less? Uhhh... but I'll take your word for it... Quote

Uhhh... but I'll take your word for it... Well, I see now there are two Epistrophy tracks on the 4cd set. Does one have a trumpet? It's odd though because the one on the lp set is over 9 minutes long and neither of the ones on the cd set is that long. Hat Hut has a lot cd reissues of lp's that have material left out. ROVA's Sax Diplomacy has an entire extra side on the lp version. Lots of Lacy tracks have been left off the cd reissues. Quote
David Ayers Posted June 6, 2003 Report Posted June 6, 2003 The Rava track isn't on here. I made a brief attempt to compare the CD tracks to the LPs and gave up. The sound of these CDs is pretty good. Quote
J.A.W. Posted June 6, 2003 Report Posted June 6, 2003 Didn't have the vinyl, so I'm not missing anything. This 4CD-set is pretty amazing. Quote
shrugs Posted June 6, 2003 Report Posted June 6, 2003 The earlier 2 cd sets sounded very nice as well. I dumped them when I got the lp sets after buying a complete Hat Hut lp collection for a very nice price. Sales of the cd's and the lp's I already had or didn't want easily surpassed the amount of $$ I actually paid. And I still have some extras that I just listed on e-bay!! Back to the cd set. At the price it's going for, one of the best deals in a long time. Quote
David Ayers Posted June 12, 2003 Report Posted June 12, 2003 What shrugs said. I didn't know these sides, but at this moment of listening I find them to be some of the best playing by either Lacy or Waldron which I have ever heard. I'd say, make this a priority if you don't yet have it. Quote

JSngry Posted November 10, 2003 Report Posted November 10, 2003 Who/what is Squidco, and have you done satisfactory business with them before? I'm liking what I'm seeing, but desire a vote of confidence from satisfied customers. Quote
brownie Posted November 10, 2003 Report Posted November 10, 2003 The Mal Waldron/Steve Lacy at Dreher package seems to be offered at reduced prices. Got mine for 18 euros (about $20). That's about the price for regular HatArt single releases. Have seen the set elsewhere at prices ranging from 20 to 35 euros. Quote
Guest Chaney Posted November 10, 2003 Report Posted November 10, 2003 Who/what is Squidco, and have you done satisfactory business with them before? I've yet to place an order with Squidco but only because other online retailers have managed to get their virtual hands into my wallet first. I may soon be placing an order for four mid-priced hatOLOGY titles. (These four not having been included in the recent Zweitausendeins offering.) Quote

I'm liking what I'm seeing, but desire a vote of confidence from satisfied customers. I placed the following order with Squidco on November 28, 2003: Anthony Braxton: Quintet: (Basel) 1977 (hatOLOGY) Clusone 3: An Hour With... (hatOLOGY) Sven-Ake Johansson / Axel Dorner / Andrea Neumann: Barcelona Series (hatOLOGY) Joe Maneri / Joe Morris / Mat Maneri: Out Right Now (hatOLOGY) Keith Rowe / John Tilbury: Duos for Doris (Erstwhile) My entire order was received by me on December 4, 2003. Good job, I'd say. Edited December 5, 2003 by Chaney Quote
