Chuck Nessa Posted April 25, 2004 Report Posted April 25, 2004 The Art Ensemble (plus guests) returns to Mandel Hall at 8 PM on Friday night. Earlier in the day George Lewis will keynote a symposium titled "Great Black Music: South-Side Aesthetics". Info available HERE. Quote
.:.impossible Posted April 25, 2004 Report Posted April 25, 2004 Damn. That's my birthday. Too bad I live in Rhode Island. Never heard of Art Ensemble of Rhode Island... Has there ever been an Art Ensemble IN Rhode Island I wonder? Chuck, when was the last time these three got together for performance, other than in recording? Quote

They have been on tour. I think this is the first performance after returning from Europe. They played in Europe a year ago too. Quote
sal Posted April 25, 2004 Report Posted April 25, 2004 Too bad they chose Corey Wilkes to play trumpet. Otherwise, I would be going to see them. I don't feel like hearing the same trumpet solo played 8 times in a night. Quote
Johnny E Posted April 26, 2004 Report Posted April 26, 2004 Chuck, Cn you tell me a little about Jaribu Shahid? Is he the permanent replacement for Malachi? I never heard of him before....should I have? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 26, 2004 Author Report Posted April 26, 2004 Besides Malachi, Jaribu has been Roscoe's bass player of choice since we recorded Snurdy McGurdy in 1980. He's been a member of the Sound Ensemble and Roscoe's Note Factory since then. He has also had extensive work with James Carter among others. I first heard him in the Griot Galaxy band in the late '70s. An AMG search might help you. Quote

Sounds like he is indeed someone I should have heard of.... Quote
