Looking for Rahsaan Roland Kirk's Here Comes the Whistleman---the one reissued by Label M a few years ago. Anyone have one to part with or have a lead on one? Will trade (see my sale list), buy, do chores, etc....

i was told that there aren't any bonus tracks on the label m reissue.

Well, I guess I'll be finding out soon....

Several places (CD Universe, Tower) I've checked on-line have samples of the two bonus tracks, so I'm assuming they're there (though these are all listed as releases from Water!, despite the Label M release pictured).

(By the way, Len, I can make you a tape of them, if in fact they do exist.)

those samples on cduniverse and allmusic do not correspond to the correct track order.

i think the 'bonus tracks' are

Aluminum Baby

Step Right Up

water probably copied label m, and the problem arose when

>>LABELM split Here Comes The Whistleman and I Wished Upon The Moon into 2 tracks each because of the intro.>>>

problem solved.

Well, I can straighten this whole thing out now. I have the Water reissue & the M reissue. There are NO BONUS TRACKS! What happened is the M label numbering of tracks doesn't match up with the cd because 2 tracks are just between song chatter IDed as tracks. l p is right with the titles of the "extra tracks". The Water reissue put the chatter as countdowns to the next track instead so the track numbering matches up. Oh well...

Huh?

...Now that's where the LP version ended, but the Label M CD reissue tags on, without credits anywhere, two absolutely essential scorchers with what seems to be Byard on piano and an over-the-top bass blowout from Holley. Kirk plays saxophones on both, being his own horn section. This makes an already satisfying date an essential one. Given these additions, this might arguably be the place to start for an interested but underexposed listener who wants to experience how dazzlingly original Kirk was. — Thom Jurek

1.   Roots (Kirk) - 4:09

  2.   Here Comes the Whistle Man (Kirk) - 4:53

  3.   I Wished on the Moon (Parker/Rainger) - 4:48

  4.   Making Love After Hours (Kirk) - 4:20

  5.   Yesterdays (Harbach/Kern) - 3:54

  6.   Aluminum Baby (Byard/Byard) - 4:41

  7.   Step Right Up (Kirk) - 4:41

Tracklist of the Atlantic Original Sound reissue I have:

1. Roots (Kirk) - 4:09

2. Here Comes the Whistle Man (Kirk) - 4:53

3. I Wished on the Moon (Parker/Rainger) - 4:48

4. Making Love After Hours (Kirk) - 4:20

5. Yesterdays (Harbach/Kern) - 3:54

6. Aluminum Baby (Byard/Byard) - 4:41

7. Step Right Up (Kirk) - 4:41

You're really sure the Label M does not have the two bonus cuts?

As sure as someone who has both versions can be. The reviewer obviously didn't listen to it and took the info from somewhere else, or just made it up. Here's the times on the Water reissue:

1. Roots (4:12)

2. Here Comes The Whistleman (5:42) (spoken intro before this song which starts it's countdown at about -1:38 or so)

3. I Wished On The Moon (6:02) (another spoken intro before this song, not as long as previous, I forget the timing, but starts in the negative numbers)

4. Making Love After Hours (4:22)

5. Yesterdays (4:08)

6. Aluminum Baby (6:12)

7. Step Right Up (4:48)

The total time of the M reissue & the Water reissue are 1 second apart. Check your own track 6 & 7 for the times. I don't know where they came up with the two 4:41 times, but the whistleman track could've been a dislexic mistake, but the bonus track times match up with track 6 & 7. A lot of CD have incorrect timings printed on them. How, don't know. That always amazes me. Especially if that was the first cd issue and lots of albums had wrong timings and weren't fixed until cds came along.

Looks like I'm a little slow here. I just got a sealed copy of the Label M version from a fellow board member and unwrapped it to check for any hidden tracks (they got to be here somewhere)... and found there was no disc at all!! Now that's what I call "hidden tracks"....

Has anyone else ever opened a brand new CD and found no disc?
