"Hearing Marilyn Crispell play solo piano is like monitoring an active volcano. She is one of a very few pianists who rise to the challenge of free jazz."

Jon Pareles, N.Y. Times

"For two decades, Marilyn Crispell has been one of the most highly regarded pianists at the sharp end of contemporary jazz."

John Fordham, The Guardian (London, England)

"one can't quite believe that she can play so perfectly and still be human"

Scott Yanow, Downbeat Magazine

Marilyn Crispell was schooled in classical music, studying piano from the age of 7. Graduating in piano and composition from the New England Conservatory of Music, she came late to jazz, but by 1978 was teaching at Karl Berger's Creative Music Studio. There she met many musicians with whom she has since worked, including Roscoe Mitchell, Wadada Leo Smith, Oliver Lake and, most crucially, Anthony Braxton. Extensive touring and recording with Braxton raised her critical profile and paved the way for numerous albums of her own, for a plethora of little labels. Crispell's recordings have ranged from solo improvisations to programs of Coltrane's music to performances of contemporary composition (by Manfred Niehaus, Robert Cogan, Barry Guy and others). Documented encounters with improvisers have included meetings with Fred Anderson, Evan Parker, Peter Brötzmann, Charles Gayle, Irène Schweizer, Eddie Prévost, Billy Bang, Tim Berne and the massed cast of the London Jazz Composers Orchestra. Amongst her influences, Crispell has cited Coltrane, Bach, Webern, Braxton, Cecil Taylor, Sun Ra, Thelonious Monk and Annette Peacock.

and Coming on June 6th. Han Bennink solo percussion + special guest. Church of the Friendly Ghost

$12-$16? How exceptionally reasonable. I would go in a second.

Few major artists ever pass through the Twin Cities for less than $25-$35. :eye:

Too bad I'm all the way up here...

Johnny E's band Friday night, Crispell on Saturday; mighty fine weekend of entertainment if I ever saw one!

To anyone who goes to these shows — please post your impressions/reaction here! Is this going to be a trio performance? Now that Mark Helias is in her group, I'm guessing the dynamic will be slightly different.

JGThomas - Thanks for responding. Hope I can make it up to Austin and meet you at the show. I'll let you know if my plans work out.

It would be great to see Johnny E's show on Friday night as well - wonder if I could drag my 6 year old out with me to see Reptet :D

Up - Love to hear any reviews of this show.

Couldn't get up to Austin with my kids this weekend after all, so I missed this and the Reptet show, unfortunately. Would have been a fun weekend of music!!
