JSngry Posted April 22, 2004 Author Report Posted April 22, 2004 In what form? I'm hoping it's some live bootleg date that I don't have. But what are the odds... Quote
Jim R Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 "World premiere compilation for the first time ever on CD! Featuring the Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra with Benny Golson & Wynton Kelly." June 14, 1957, perhaps? Dizzy's band, under Mogie's name? A compilation? "Lonehill"? "First time ever on CD" (for this particular "compilation"?) I've got ten tracks from 6/14/57 on a CD... albeit on the infamous Jazz Hour label... and it was only $.99 at the local Fry's (we don't carry all your jazz CD needs) Electronics. Quote
bertrand Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 (edited) Shhh... Don't let Verve know about this new 'first time this particular compilation has ever been issued on CD' marketing ploy. They will run wild with it. Bertrand. Edited April 22, 2004 by bertrand Quote
JSngry Posted May 16, 2004 Author Report Posted May 16, 2004 Now at Dusty Groove (and tell me that THIS ain't some choice hypeage...): What can we say, with a line up like this? Lee Morgan leads an astounding combo here that includes Dizzy Gillespie's Orchestra -- and some of the best players of the period! The line of trumpets includes Talib Ahmad Dawud, Carl Warwick and others behind Lee & Diz, Ray Connors, Al Grey and others on Trombone, Pee Wee Moore on baritone, Wynton Kelley on piano, and perhaps the groups most unsung hero Charlie Persip on drums -- who just kills it on these tracks! A great live testament of a great group, and that's just about all there is to it. 16 tracks in all, running 78 minutes! Includes "A Night In Tunisia", "Autumn Leaves", "Dizzy's Business", "Anitra's Dance", "Begin The Beguine", "Left Hand Corner", "Yesterdays", "Wonder Why", "Cool Breeze", "Birk's Works", "Whisper Not", "That's All", "I Remember Clifford" and more. So Dizzy's orchestra was a combo, and Lee was leading it? So, I DON'T have this, but where/how else has it been issued? Quote
couw Posted May 16, 2004 Report Posted May 16, 2004 Seems to stem from our friends in the Andorra hide-out. Nothing on their site yet. Unlikely to stem from the Verve Birk's Works 2CD set as the 50 years are not up yet. The set Jim R mentions has been out on other "labels" as well, totalling 13 tracks and some 70 mins I think. Wait and see what pops up at the Disconforme site I say. Quote
robviti Posted May 16, 2004 Report Posted May 16, 2004 (edited) Maybe some of the material comes from the 1956 Birdland dates originally issued on Fanfare: Dizzy Gillespie and his Orchestra Talib Daawud, Dizzy Gillespie, Lee Morgan, Ermit V. John L Posted May 16, 2004 Report Posted May 16, 2004 So Dizzy's orchestra was a combo, and Lee was leading it? Read more carefully, Jim. It says that the combo "includes" the Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra. Probably that isn't even the half of it! Quote
JSngry Posted May 16, 2004 Author Report Posted May 16, 2004 Either way, the 50-year limit isn't up on this material. Not sure if the 50 year limit applies (legally or morally) to items that were bootlegs in the first place. Ain't that a bitch... The Chester stuff I knew about, but not so the Birdland. Now I'm confused... Quote
jazzbo Posted May 16, 2004 Report Posted May 16, 2004 Hey, I think this also includes the Wynton Kelly Trio! Quote

Now I'm confused... One of my fellow posters on the West Coast list, in a thread on Lonehill, pointed out that Andorra is NOT a part of the EU; and that they have their own 25 year copyright rule! I am not sure of the accuracy of this observation, but it would certainly answer your questions, AND raise a whole new potential list of possible reissues from that tiny mountain community. Now what would a 25 year limit make possible that we are all salivating for...? Quote

Shawn Posted May 17, 2004 Report Posted May 17, 2004 Hot nasty mutually degrading sex with a coked-out Jennifer Lopez? Great...just when I THOUGHT I was going to be able to sleep tonight....just the image I needed.. Quote
garthsj Posted May 17, 2004 Report Posted May 17, 2004 Hot nasty mutually degrading sex with a coked-out Jennifer Lopez? Would it have to be "degrading"? I would appreciate the hell out of her ..... and I will pass your request on to the Andorrans.. cunning little mountain trolls that they are ... I have this image of the Andorran CD factory.. something like Santa's Workshop .. all these little guys running around in lederhosen ... pressing jazz CDs ..... with "Sidewinder" playing on the sound system ... Sheesh! I may not sleep myself tonight .. Quote

I am not sure of the accuracy of this observation, but it would certainly answer your questions, AND raise a whole new potential list of possible reissues from that tiny mountain community. According to The World Factbook on www.cia.gov: "Andorra is a member of the EU Customs Union and is treated as an EU member for trade in manufactured goods (no tariffs) and as a non-EU member for agricultural products." Of course, you know how accurate the CIA's information-gathering has been in the past few years! Quote
sheldonm Posted May 17, 2004 Report Posted May 17, 2004 I did a little shopping at Dusty Groove** this weekend and had this disc in my grubby little hands only to put it back. It seemed like I had most of this on other recordings. I did pick up The Jack Wilson Quartet's "Ramblin'", Benny Carter's "Sax a la Carter", Yusef Lateef's "Golden Flute" and Mel Brown's "Chicken Fat" and a couple by Charles Tolliver. **Those Bastards! garthsj Posted May 17, 2004 Report Posted May 17, 2004 (edited) Lederhosen? in Andorra? Well, what would YOU wear while trolling along these mountains? The pictures make it look like a very large Disneyland, with a jazz CD factory ... and the fact that the photo captions are in Russian makes me doubly suspicious... garthsj Posted May 17, 2004 Report Posted May 17, 2004 (edited) I should have done this earlier, but I finally checked the Andorran copyright agreement for myself this morning. It appears (and my one year at law school does not equip me to make a definitive judgement) that Andorra does subscribe to the "fifty year" period like other EU countries. Perhaps the legal eagles amongst us can give a clearer picture from this document. Of course, this just adds to the mystery of how Lonehill can release this seemingly illegal material .. may be they legally licensed it .. simple as that! Edited May 17, 2004 by garthsj Quote
king ubu Posted May 21, 2004 Report Posted May 21, 2004 Had a look at this CD in a store last week - it consists of track 14-23 from the Chester PA concert and other stray items, possibly recorded at the Birdland (or some other NYC club), and one track from Newport or some other large US festival (the very last track of the reissue). Was too lazy to write it down. However, it seems it's taken from the discography posted on the first page of this thread. And I'm sure there are 10 tracks from the Chester broadcast, namely #1-10 on the reissue. ubu Quote
