Uncle Skid Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 Hmmm.... I'd think the exact opposite -- 7,500 copies, been on the endangered list for at least a year now (maybe more?), been in print for quite a long time now... Of course, what really matters, is that this music ends up in the hands of those that really appreciate it, as opposed to speculators... Quote
Late Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 Absolutely. I guess I was just naively thinking: "The music's so good, and if it's out-of-print, people will pay anything for it!" (Insert optional dork laugh.) Quote
Uncle Skid Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 Yes. The music is indeed quite good! I think there will always be an (inflated) eBay market for OOP Mosaics, if only for those (like myself) that become interested in various sets long after they're gone. I'm completely shocked by the $ amounts that the (fairly recently) OOP Morgan/Shorter set is fetching. I was lucky enough to have purchased that one before it was gone -- but I can say confidently that there is no way I would pay $200+ for that set now. It's good... but THAT good?? (The Andrew Hill set is another matter entirely!) The JJ, however, has been in print for so long that I would hope that everybody that wants a copy already has one. BUT, I can't say I'd be surprised if you are right. OOP Mosaics are instantly more valuable than in-print titles, and eBay prices have never made any sense to me! Quote
Late Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 Dig. I hope (trust) that at least all interested parties here have it, or purchase it very soon. The set does not disappoint. Even if you're not a big J.J. fan, but are a big Max Roach fan ... you'll want this one. I remember wavering on the Andrew Hill set way back when (because I already had about half the set in different forms) ... and didn't buy it. Needless to say, that was one of the dumberer moves I've made. As a result, I pre-ordered the Mosaic Select about .02 seconds after it was made available for pre-order. Easily my favorite Select. jeffrey r Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 The JJ, however, has been in print for so long that I would hope that everybody that wants a copy already has one. Seems like a valid point, but there are always people who come late to the party. For example, as of a year ago, my jazz collection consisted of a few Miles albums, and a few Coltrane albums. Didn't know that Rollins, Shorter, Mobley, Morgan, etc. existed. Then through this board, the Hoffman forum, and other boards, I learned of Blue Note, Verve, and so many of the amazing jazz artists out there. Needless to say, I now own about 10 big Mosaic sets, about 10 selects, many Miles and Coltrane boxsets, a ton of Blue Note albums, etc. Anyway, my point is, if the JJ set went OOP a year and a half ago, I wouldn't own it. Just like all of the other Mosaic sets that are OOP and which I don't own. But since I got in at the right time to own the JJ set, amongst others, it is a part of my collection. But there are always new people being turned on to jazz, and they're a ready market for the out-of-print sets that many of you probably took for granted when you were buying them up at regular prices. Me personally, I won't pay e-bay prices for OOP Mosaic sets. But I'm upset I don't have some of them in my collection. Quote

Am I looking in the mirror? I have a few years head start on you but not that many, and yup, that's where my jazz collection started too (as it does for many.) Once I got going there were still too many "basics" too pick up one disc at a time than to jump right into Mosaics. There are continually new people coming to the party. Hooray hooray! I'm telling ya, if we could convince Mosaic to give just a nickel a disc that came their way from organissimo it might be an amount one shouldn't sneeze at. Nice post Jeffrey. Quote
Matthew Posted April 29, 2006 Report Posted April 29, 2006 I decided to order the J.J. set this morning, my first Mosaic box set purchase in three years. After three years of buying nothing from Mosaic, this week I bought all the singles and now this one. Yikes! What's happening to me. Quote

medjuck Posted April 29, 2006 Report Posted April 29, 2006 Me too! Actually I only bought 3 singles. Blue Trumbone was one of the first Jazz albums I owned. (got it form the Columbia record club when it was new. ) Curious to see what number I get. Unfortunately I'll be in LA next week when they arrive here in Santa Barbara, so I won't find out my number until next weekend. Quote
