Man with the Golden Arm
Yikes, glad your on the mend... I'd be talking this up at a "reputable' bike shop just so you get something good for this. I am always amazed at the complete lack of respect most drivers have for someone on a bike. Many a time I've pissed-off people behind me by going un-godly slow until I can find a large swath of terrain to yield some right of way to a group of bikers. PHILLYQ
Glad to hear ot was only a broken bike and not a broken Brandon. be sure to file a claim, and claim that your bike was pretty good- you should get a good new bike out of this. If that fails, well sue- everyone else does it! Call Shyster & Shyster and claim enough injuries for a new bike and tons of Mosaics!
Son-of-a-Weizen
Two passengers volunteered to be witnesses and gave me their info. So based on what they'd seen go down, the witnesses didn't rise from their seats and walk up to the driver and tell him he might wanna stop the bus? mikeweil
Well, the good news is that you seem to be okay. Is it considered hit-and-run if the driver didn't even realize that he hit you (and with a bus I can understand him not realizing it). Sheesh... Damn....glad you're OK! Some of those busses and trucks are so big, they can run over a small car and not even feel it! Mark experienced that once. and I was in a car! brrrrr. luck is on your side it seems. don't let it slip. Me too!!! Scary - you wonder that moment if you'll ever get out if this intact, and then suddenly it's over ... Glad to hear you're okay. To paraphrase John Coltrane when Elvin Jones wrecked his car: "I can always get another bike, but there's only one Brandon ..."
neveronfriday
Being an avid cyclist myself, it would have indeed been a stranger thing if Brandon had hit the bus, dragged it along for a few meters and left it lying in the dust. God, I've been waiting for a news item like that for centuries! Cheers! P.S.: I had a slightly similar run-in with a larger truck several years ago at a crossing (classic dead spot in the rearview mirror kind of thing). Glad you didn't get hurt, Brandon! You were damn lucky. A student of mine got run over by a bus 11 years ago and a] the driver didn't notice and b] absolutely nothing distiguishable was left of the student. I know, because I was asked to identify the victim. I couldn't. [Edit: I keep on forgetting about the b] B) bug] Edited April 20, 2004 by deus62
Son-of-a-Weizen
Since this thread is about strange incidents involving wheeled objects....on Sat. I was doing about 80 in the passing lane out on #66 in VA when I came up on a group of 4 bikes bunched together in the middle lane. The wife looked over at them and one of 'em motioned that he had something to show us.....he then comes right up alongside the passenger side and hands her a brochure for some weekend D.C. Bike Expo. One small error on his part and he'd likely wind up under my tires. Nuts.

chris olivarez
Brandon I'm glad you weren't hurt. It doesn't seem unreasonable to me to have them fix your bike. If they don't see it that way find yourself a lawyer and give them ten times the stress that they gave you.

Maybe that's why the bus was able to be caught-up-to by Brandon, even after he took the time to straighten his wheel and collect himself. Really glad you're okay, Brandon. Rainy Day had good advice about keeping a paper trail of incident reports. Hope the bus company makes good (supervisor coming to the scene is a good sign) -- and if they resist, you're right, a local-TV-news' "Shame on You"-type segment can probably bring them to their senses. jazzbo
Well rather than hear news about Wu Tan breaking up, I was more interested to hear news of Brandon's bike and its state of repair and who might be financing said repair. . . . Brandon Burke
Well, as it turns out, the friendly folks at University Cyclery (29th & N. Lamar) fixed it for free!. I went in there initially just to get an estimate. Something I could give to Cap Metro. The guy put my bike on the rack, started taking things apart, and just kept going. Several minuted later, he took it down and said "here you go". I asked what he wanted and he told me not to worry about it, "just look out for busses". Needless to say, I highly recommend this shop and will be making any and all bike related purchases there from now on.

Cool,,, I'm glad things worked out.. I am also an avid rider... I have a Miyata racing bike but do mostly cross country mountain biking... When I ride the road bike it's usually on paved trails where the common problems are passing roller bladers and families with kids and strollers sprawled out over the pavement.... I don't ride much these days on roads and streets with motor traffic unless there is a wide paved shoulder or a bike lane..
