tonym Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 Great innit. Hazy sunshine yesterday and today. Topless motoring for a bit yesterday. All of a sudden, the leaf buds on the trees outside the house have doubled in size. Smelt the wild garlic on beckside too. Summer is coming!!! Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 Very hazy in the Midlands yesterday - I drove to Birmingham to see Henri Texier. The sun came through the mist a bit in the afternoon, however. Nice and warm though. Very dull this morning but still warm. Might hit the weeding this afternoon! Quote
David Williams Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 How was Texier? I bought the new album as a first sample of his music - must admit I find the North African flavours a bit off-putting at the moment, but there're many things I like about the album. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 (edited) Enjoyable but not great. The first half was just his trio playing to a film set in southern Tunisia - 'Remparts D'Argile' - nice playing but unable to really take off because of the need to fit the film sequence. 1 hour and 25 minutes of this was a bit hard going. The recording of this music is much stronger. The Strada Sextet were much more the business but I think we were all a bit tired by then. I don't find that Sextet or the Vivre CD nearly as affecting as his previous Azur Quintet or his trio with Louis Sclavis and Aldo Romano. The opener - 'Old Dehli' is wonderful (as it was at the concert) but I find the CD a bit disjointed after that. 'Mosaic Man' remains my favourite Texier - a very special disc - along with the two Texier/Sclavis/Romano CDs. Back to the weather. Still dull. Must clean up the living room... Close, Arizona. And no, it never does get cold here, at least not in Phoenix. This winter was very short and very mild not unlike last year. We really only have two seasons, Summer and Spring. We will be well into summer temps here soon, 100+ for months straight. Quote

But I'd never heard of Phoenix Beach; this is probably a sarcastic slight at how far you are from a beach, or is it a district around the city? If it is the latter, how did it get that name? Quote

tonym Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 Bu99er. I knew it. So where's Palm Beach then? Quote
catesta Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 They've got real water there in Palm Beach, Floida. Quote
BruceH Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 Today, alternating sun and rain. A strange day. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 What is the Texas Panhandle? Serious question. I havn't a clue what a Panhandle is. Sounds like something used to organise cattle on the Great Plains! Quote
catesta Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 It hit 96(F) here yesterday! Today it was about 85. Quote
AfricaBrass Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 It hit 96(F) here yesterday! Today it was about 85. Damn! I don't blame you for moving. Here, it was rainy and around 49 degrees. Quote
catesta Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 Did I forget to mention we are under a pollution advisory? Quote
AfricaBrass Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 Did I forget to mention we are under a pollution advisory? Yikes! Actually, I recently found out about pollution in the Phoenix area. We have some friends who moved there close to two years ago. My wife sent her friend an email inquiring about the area. The message we received did the trick in turning my wife away from moving there. Yay! Her friend complained about the polution being really bad and that many people they know have respitory problems. I'm happy for you that you're moving. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted April 10, 2005 Report Posted April 10, 2005 Took 50 kids to Wales this weekend. Result? The return of winter - Freezing temperatures, light snow, sleet, rain. Snowdonia looked spectacular, however, when the sun chose to pop its head out! Quote
rostasi Posted April 10, 2005 Report Posted April 10, 2005 What is the Texas Panhandle? Serious question. I havn't a clue what a Panhandle is. Sounds like something used to organise cattle on the Great Plains! Hi Bev, When you use "panhandle" as a geographic term, it refers to any long land protrusion of a US state. Texas isn't the only state to have a "panhandle" - about 8 states do - including two in West Virginia. The name comes from the long handle that is on a pan that you use to cook with on a stove. The term "panhandle" can be used as a verb, too. In this case, it refers to the method of approaching strangers and begging for money. Quote
tonym Posted April 10, 2005 Report Posted April 10, 2005 Friday: Snow, hail, sleet and cold northerley winds. 2 deg C through most of the day. Sunday: 16 deg C, sunshine, top down, sleeves up and sweat on. Don't you just love British weather. Quote
GregK Posted April 10, 2005 Author Report Posted April 10, 2005 70s all weekend here in SE Michigan, mostly sunny, few clouds. Absolutely beautiful! Quote

A Lark Ascending Posted April 10, 2005 Report Posted April 10, 2005 Ah! I see. It's the bit of Texas that really belongs to Oklahoma. I'd always assumed it was by the sea. Many thanks. Quote
