sidewinder Posted July 22, 2013 Report Posted July 22, 2013 (edited) Pack one of these ! I stayed in Boscastle about 15 years ago - some years before the floods. It was very enjoyable and a great base for Clovelly etc. Edited July 22, 2013 by sidewinder Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted July 22, 2013 Report Posted July 22, 2013 Visions of Thursday: Yay! Mad Martin's one of my favourites! MG Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted July 22, 2013 Report Posted July 22, 2013 Hoping for a nice coast walk to Tintagel. Also back the other way to Crackington Haven. But I could be bailing water. Quote
sidewinder Posted July 22, 2013 Report Posted July 22, 2013 (edited) Hoping for a nice coast walk to Tintagel. That was my next stop on that trip after Boscastle (the next one being Penzance). Tintagel was great but the pub I stayed at not far from the castle was haunted ! Edited July 22, 2013 by sidewinder Quote

Tintagel was great but the pub I stayed at not far from the castle was haunted ! The main street is haunted - by lost hippies selling King Arthur tack and New Age bric-a-brac. Like Glastonbury. Quote
sidewinder Posted July 22, 2013 Report Posted July 22, 2013 Yep, King Arthur is really big in those parts. Pure fiction, of course.. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted July 22, 2013 Report Posted July 22, 2013 Which hill fort is that, Sidewinder? A bit small for Maiden Castle. Quote
sidewinder Posted July 22, 2013 Report Posted July 22, 2013 (edited) Bev - It's South Cadbury Castle in Somerset. To my mind, the best of the Iron Age Hill Forts, along with Maiden Castle. Certainly the best in terms of panoramic views - not as big as Maiden Castle but still pretty impresive. And a much better candidate as a seat for 'Arthur' that Tintagel/Glastonbury (more likely if he existed it was 'Ambrosius' I guess) during the Dark Ages. Edited July 22, 2013 by sidewinder Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted July 22, 2013 Report Posted July 22, 2013 Ah, South Cadbury. Recall reading Leslie Alcock's "By South Cadbury, is that Camelot..." many years ago. Think it was based on the big dig there in the 50s/60s. Quote
BeBop Posted July 22, 2013 Report Posted July 22, 2013 Todays weather: climate controlled. I've been stranded in an airport 10 hours. Really not unusual, but today it left me time to post to the weather thread. Quote
sidewinder Posted July 23, 2013 Report Posted July 23, 2013 I do love a good summer downpour. A few years ago I was playing cricket on a roasting Sunday afternoon. About 6pm the sky went black, all the trees started to sway and there was a truly monstrous thunderstorm. Within 4 or 5 minutes the whole field was under an inch of water. An impressive sight. May get one here tomorrow. It's started ! Ah, South Cadbury. Recall reading Leslie Alcock's "By South Cadbury, is that Camelot..." many years ago. Think it was based on the big dig there in the 50s/60s. Still have a copy of that book - I think it's still the best text on that place. The major dig was in the late 1960s. Quote
kinuta Posted July 23, 2013 Report Posted July 23, 2013 We've had a violent, window shaking thunderstorm and monsoon type downpour. The sky was black and the power went out for five minutes. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted July 23, 2013 Report Posted July 23, 2013 It had finished by 0600 here and the streets were mostly dry. Forecast is more rain at 1800. MG Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted July 23, 2013 Report Posted July 23, 2013 My wife's watering the garden. The forecast said rain in 50 mins. So I just looked at the latest forecast. No rain forecast. Thank heavens for a wife with extra-sensory powers! MG Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted July 23, 2013 Report Posted July 23, 2013 (edited) Standing outside IKEA waiting for a full on monsoon to pass! (20 minutes later Nottingham traffic in total chaos as various bits of road turned into rivers. Had to do a 6 mile detour to travel 1 mile). Edited July 23, 2013 by A Lark Ascending Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted July 26, 2013 Report Posted July 26, 2013 Arrived in Cornwall on Wednesday afternoon to be told it hadn't rained for weeks. Two hours later the heavens opened and it didn't stop for the first half of the night. Fortunately Thursday was gorgeous and it's pretty good today too if a bit cloudier. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted July 26, 2013 Report Posted July 26, 2013 Today's the last day of sunshine, according to the BBC. Five (at least) days of rain forecast. MG Quote
paul secor Posted July 26, 2013 Report Posted July 26, 2013 Beautiful here today - 80ish, bit of a breeze, low humidity. I'll take many more like this one. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted July 29, 2013 Report Posted July 29, 2013 Rain forecast for most of this afternoon hasn't materialised. It's a bit windy; our bay tree in unstable pot got blown over. MG Quote
BillF Posted July 29, 2013 Report Posted July 29, 2013 About 40 minutes ago, we had the heaviest hail storm I have ever seen, summer or winter. Lasted about 10 minutes, hail the size of marbles. The pavements and gardens were carpeted with ice, the streets resembled streams. All quiet now, the flood water starting to recede, the sun is out and there are shredded leaves everywhere. Bill, did you get it? Pleased to have missed the hail, Richard. But we've had some very heavy downpours here today and yesterday. Quote
sidewinder Posted July 29, 2013 Report Posted July 29, 2013 Just driven through one heck of a downpour. New car too - not the most auspicious time to test the brakes in the wet ! Quote
