John Coltrane The Heavyweight Champion (complete atlantic recording)

I bought the cd version several years ago, I just discovered the Lp version on Acoustic Sounds for 200 bucks. http://store.acousticsounds.com/browse_det...?Title_ID=10826

The description is charming, it would be nice to have the single Lps brand new, plus the alternate in another Lp and the booklet.

BUT no information about the mastering, it wouldn't be nice to have a digital master on Lp.

Is anybody out there who own this box set, or have some more accurate information?

Thanks

I have the set on vinyl and it sounds pretty nice - recommended. $200 sounds about the right ball-park for a mint set (I saw another one advertised here in the UK for £120 this week, about the same amount). Not sure on the source of the mastering at present time - don't have the set in front of me but will have a check later tonight.

I view this set as a 'Rhino Does Mosaic' - certainly a nice one to have.

Maybe Acoustic Sounds knows the mastering info for such a big ticket item. If the label is not boasting about the source material and an all-analog processing chain, I would be skeptical. If it turns out to be digital, ditch the idea and get the Miles 60s Quintet set from Mosaic. I think its a great use for less than $200 for vinyl, and you could hunt down one or two of the Coltrane Atlantics at a local vinyl shop.

I remember from past discussions of this box set that it was purported to be an analog, not a digital, mastering.

I've checked the booklet and also the back of the box of my set but there's no indication as to whether or not it's an analogue or digital master. The set in my posession is from the second pressing (1 of 3,000) issued in 2000. The first pressing was a numbered edition released back in 1995.

I'll have a listen to 'Equinox' sometime over the weekend to check that 'botch job' issue.

I bought this set last year from Music Direct (same as Lon's link - $169). I believe it was Dmitry who said that the set was an analog remaster. I also couldn't find any information printed on the packaging or booklet. The remaster credits list: Geoff Sykes, Bill Inglot, Gene Paul/dB Plus, Bob Fisher.

My set is also one of the year 2000 second edition. Printed on the box, "This is a repressing of a box set which was originally released in 1995 as a numbered limited edition. There will be only 3000 copies of the unnumbered second edition manufactured".

The albums seem to be pressed on 180gm vinyl. When I was looking into buying the set I saw descriptions that said both 180gm and 150gm. I don't know which is correct, but it is certainly heavier then 120gm.

My copy is #2714 of the 1995 1st edition of 3000.

The sticker says "Pressed on 150-Gram Vinyl"

A couple of points -

*All LPs in this set except for the LPs containing alternate takes are analogue masters.

*1995 set was 150-gm, while the 2000 set was 180-gm.

I am surprised it's still available. I would've thought it was all sold out by now.
