Aggie87 Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 turn it up... "Sweet Home Alabama, where the skies are so blue..." Quote
jazzbo Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 Is it really possible anyone will make a movie about Brownie? I'd like to hope so but don't expect to ever see one. The Hadju book about Dylan, Baez and the Farina's dust jacket says Hadju's "Lush Life" is being developed into a movie. . . . I've evidence that this was considered but still don't think we'll see it and there's more drama in a life of Strays under Duke's wing than in Brownie's life. . . . Quote
mikeweil Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 How about Wynton Marsalis for the title role (I doubt Roy Hargrove would get a haircut for the role ...) - ? Quote
clinthopson Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 Just don't hire Forest Whittaker to play Brownie - he sucked as Bird. Or Jim Carrey for that matter. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 Hmm. . . I actually liked Forrest as Bird. . . but whadda I know ('cept what I like!) Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 Hmm. . . I actually liked Forrest as Bird. . . but whadda I know ('cept what I like!) Worked for me too. Haven't seen too many things Whittaker was in that I didn't like, come to think of it. He was great in Smoke, just to name one of many cool films he's been in. Quote
JSngry Posted April 15, 2004 Report Posted April 15, 2004 Whittaker looked too much like Cannonball to "be" Bird for me (plus, I didn't care for the script all that much - didn't hate it like some did, just didn't care for it). But if anybody ever makes a Cannonball movie, there's your guy! Quote
Harold_Z Posted April 15, 2004 Report Posted April 15, 2004 For the most part movies about musicians make me cringe. They just don't get it right. Most egregious examples being Steve Allen's Benny Goodman, Jimmy Stewart's Glenn Miller, and Sal Mineo's Gene Krupa (light up and be somebody). Really just good for laughs. Having said that, I DID like Forest Whittaker's Bird portrayal, but there is an example of a movie that came under heavy flak for various reasons, a lot of them wrong. I'd rather see footage of the real guys with as little commentary as possible. Quote
Claude Posted April 15, 2004 Report Posted April 15, 2004 (edited) The best actor I've seen playing a jazz character was Dexter Gordon Unfortunately I haven't seen the guy who played Billy Cross in Dingo Edited April 15, 2004 by Claude Quote
JSngry Posted April 15, 2004 Report Posted April 15, 2004 Unfortunately I haven't seen the guy who played Billy Cross in Dingo He was on an episode of Miami Vice too. Not a bad actor. Quote
brownie Posted April 15, 2004 Report Posted April 15, 2004 I saw 'Dingo' when it was released. The Billy Cross part was handled pretty well. But the film was a near total loss. Quote
Bright Moments Posted May 15, 2005 Report Posted May 15, 2005 Ah, I haven't banned anyone in such a long time. So much fun. Larry Kart Posted May 16, 2005 Report Posted May 16, 2005 As I may have said before here, all things being equal, Clint could have made a great movie about Stan Kenton, especially if he'd done it when he was still of an age where he himself could have played the title role. And with Lennie Niehaus as Lennie Niehaus! Quote
