undergroundagent Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 Hey Folks, I just received the "Howard McGhee Vol. 2/Tal Farlow" disc today from a trade with a fellow board member and, I must say, I'm pleasently surprised. This music is simply fantastic. Are all the other 10" series this good? Great disc!!! Quote
AfricaBrass Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 To me, not all the discs are of the same quality..... BUT.... For me, they're an essential purchase. I LOVED this series! Quote
Late Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 Are all the other 10" series this good? And you'll particularly want the Julius Watkins and Gil Mellé sides. Quote
AfricaBrass Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 And you'll particularly want the Julius Watkins and Gil Mellé sides. They're GREAT! Quote
jazzbo Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 Don't miss the Sal Salvador. . . that one (with a Capitol date added) is a great cd! Quote
couw Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 I have always been fond of the Foster/Wallington and particularly also the McGhee/Drew sets. Quote
Brad Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 I like 'em all although I don't have the Melle. I just picked up the Foster/Wallington and that's great. My favorites are the Maggies however. Quote
jlhoots Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 I have all of them & glad of it. On a non-musical note, I love the cover picture on the Watkins. Quote
mgraham333 Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 I tracked down copies of the Watkins and the Foster/Wallington and am happy with both. Watkins answered any questions about the French Horn's place in jazz. Quote
garthsj Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 The 10" BN's was a wonderful series of reissues. The key question is whether there will be other 10" reissues in the near future.. How about "The Best From the West," and the "Lou Mecca Quartet" albums, for instance? There were 12" versions of these later, but as far as know they have never been reissued as CDs in the U.S. (Yes... there are very expensive Japanese reissues available). Quote
J.A.W. Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 (edited) If memory serves there was a post on the BNBB that there wouldn't be any additions to this series because of poor sales. Edited April 13, 2004 by J.A.W. Quote
couw Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 If memory serves there was a post on the BNBB that there wouldn't be any additions to this series because of poor sales. that's two memories that may serve. I remember reading something along these lines as well. pity really. Quote
king ubu Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 I have all of them, and they're all fantastic, indeed! And really don't miss the Salvador, it's very good! (Eddie Costa, too...) My favorites are the Mellé, Watkins and Foster/Wallington, with the McGhees close behind. ubu Quote
BruceH Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 Great series! Love the Foster/Wallington. Quote
DrJ Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 Well worth tracking all these down, although I think the Farlow/McGhee, Salvador, and Melle were my favorites. The Lou Mecca would be a great U.S. reissue if they ever revive the 10" series - have the JRVG and it's groovy. Quote
brownie Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 The Lou Mecca would be a great U.S. reissue if they ever revive the 10" series - have the JRVG and it's groovy. This is a very fine album by a neglected guitar player. The one BN 10incher I would like to see reissued is the Urbie Green Septet date (with Doug Mettome). Never managed to see this item at a reasonable price. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 i have all the 10" but the watkins. i like the series ss1 Quote
Tony Pusey Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 it took me sometime to track down this series and I will only add that the whole lot great. I particularly like the Watkins, and Melle, I too would really love a revival of this series... Quote
undergroundagent Posted April 15, 2004 Author Report Posted April 15, 2004 Nice haul today.... McGhee/Drew Foster/Wallington $22 Quote
Indestructible! Posted April 15, 2004 Report Posted April 15, 2004 Hey Folks, I just received the "Howard McGhee Vol. 2/Tal Farlow" disc today from a trade with a fellow board member and, I must say, I'm pleasently surprised. This music is simply fantastic. Are all the other 10" series this good? Great disc!!! Hi Allan, I'm glad you're enjoying the McGhee/Farlow trade... glad I could send it your way! I personally love all six of the 10" series CD's. Some of them are more favored than others (the McGhee's are at the top of the list for me, followed by the Foster date), but I'm glad as hell that Blue Note put these out. Now, if there's anyway we could convince them to put out more of the 5000 series dates, I'd be a happy man... especially the two "West Coast" volumes! I'm also with Brownie on wanting to see the Urbie Green reissued someday! Cheers, Shane Quote
jazzbo Posted April 15, 2004 Report Posted April 15, 2004 Yes, I'm hoping that these may end up being RVG'd one day. . . . I would prefer that because RVG's work on the early mono material from WOR and his Hackensack "studio" in the RVG series is stellar sounding! I'd be very happy to see the Art Hodes and Bechet material come out that way (each of these artists as leader). . . . That would be one of my "dream" requests of the RVG series. Quote
couw Posted April 15, 2004 Report Posted April 15, 2004 Nice haul today.... McGhee/Drew Foster/Wallington $22 you mean anyone actually reads the crap I write here cool catch! I didn't mention these just for the heck of it. Drew is really good IMO. Quote
Christiern Posted January 24, 2005 Report Posted January 24, 2005 How about the 7" series? I decided to, finally, create a database of my hundreds of 45's--came across many unusual items, including this juke box kit: Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted January 25, 2005 Report Posted January 25, 2005 I don't have any of those 7" 33s, but I do still have a stack of 45s by Jimmy Smith, Thad Jones, Kenny Burrell, Sonny Clark, Bennie Green, Fred Jackson, Freddie Hubbard, Horace Parlan, Donald Byrd, Horace Silver, Three Sounds, Joe Henderson, Freddie Roach, Eddie Gale (!) and the notorious Lee Morgan Midnight Cowboy/Popi.
