Claude Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 (edited) Where I live it is rather difficult to see world renowned jazz musicians. I don't go to concerts very often. The few jazz greats I'vew seen are: - Archie Shepp (twice), with Horace Parlan - Don Cherry - McCoy Tyner (Big Band) - John Scofield, Joe Lovano, Dave Holland, Al Foster (ScoLoHoFo) - Tom Harrell - Gary Burton The other ones I´ve seen are european musicians less known in the US. The greatest jazz concert I've seen so far was Paolo Fresu's Quintet. Maybe because it was in a small club. Most concerts here are in large concert or theatre halls not well suited for jazz events because they lack atmoshere. I missed a Miles Davis concert in the mid 80's. A friend of my father had an extra ticket and asked to come to this Miles open air concert in Luxembourg, but at that time I didn't know who Miles was and declined. I often intended to go to the North Sea Jazz Festival in Den Haag, only 300 km from my city, but it has never worked out so far. Edited April 13, 2004 by Claude Quote

RainyDay Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 Oh, yessss, Ornette on November 8, 2002. It was a dark and stormy night I remember well. Quote
brownie Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 The same subject (artists seen live) was discussed last year. I remember Christiern recalling that he had seen Charlie Parker perform. Quote
RainyDay Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 Okay, I'll stop chiming in but I keep reading more names I'd forgotten. Back when UC Berkeley had a jazz festival, I had a chance to see (and meet) some wonderful artists. Quote

A Lark Ascending Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 I think the most I saw on stage at the same time were: Archie Shepp, Grachan Moncur III, Rosewell Rudd, Andrew Cyrille, Reggie Workman with the occasional bit of reading by Amiri Baraka. And: A Kenny Wheeler big band with Abercrombie, Erskine, Holland, Taylor, Winstone, Sulzmann, Lowther, Parker, Rutherford amongst others. And: Moholo, Rogers, Tippett, Rutherford, Parker, Yarde (OK, Yarde is a bit young for 'great' yet). Quote

RainyDay Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 (edited) Okay, I'm chiming in again but I have to mention Kenny Barron. I've seen him a few times but the best was a couple summers ago in SF at a small community theater in the Mission District. He talked about his musical roots and influences and played in the styles of his heroes and mentors. He talked about how Dizzy loved to play the piano and after sets when they were jamming and fooling around, Diz would kick Barron off the piano so he could play. It was an exceptional afternoon. Another time some years ago, he played a duet with Bobby Hutcherson at this tiny little Oakland venue, that no longer exists, near Jack London Square . Those two guys had a blast that night. It was small and intimate. It was the first time I'd ever seen Barron. He is one of my favorites. Such an elegant style. Edited April 14, 2004 by RainyDay Quote
Pete C Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 I've seen Barron a number of times in a variety of situations, but one of the nicest was the 2-piano gig with John Hicks to celebrate Bradley's 20th anniversary. One of my greatest regrets is not having seen Bill Evans, since I didn't really get into him until after he died. Quote
medjuck Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 Instead of editing the old post this time I'll add some names here. I somehow forgot nearly everyones I'd seen after moving to LA. That would include ARt pepper, Bill Perkins, Ella Fitzgerald (what I think was her last concert-- at Hollywood Bowl) Benny Carter and Stan Getz. Stevie Wonder sat in with Getz and a friend of mine compalined that he'd come to see Stan Getz not Stevie Wonder! Quote
