Danny D’Imperio’s Big Band Bloviation, Vol. 2

Rompin’ Records RRCD-048

Following his excellent first big band disc with more big band bop featuring “special guest performers” Danny D’Imperio has another winner.

Big Band Bloviation, Vol. 2 has such DEEP stalwarts as Gary Pribek (IMHO one of the best alto players around), Chris Persad, Joe Magnarelli, John Mosca, Ralph Lalama, Peter Mack and John Rhode who are joined by Barry Harris, Lew Tabackin, Peter Bernstein, Dennis Dotson, Eric Alexander, Gary Smulyan (notice all the VV Band players) and others.

This is straight ahead jazz with lots of solo space to the featured players.

Lew Tabackin muscles his way through “Sweet Georgia Upside Down” to great effect. His distinctive style and drive are out there throughout. I can just visualize Lew doing his little dance as he plays. Danny’s drumming adds just the right accents.

Barry Harris is featured on bop anthem “Groovin High” in a Rob McConnell arrangement along with Magnarelli and Pribek. This is ear candy for us beboppers.

Lee Morgan’s gorgeous “Ceora” features Peter Bernstein and Eric Alexander and some superb section work, especially the ‘bones.

I enjoyed every cut on the cd but those three really caught my attention.

The liner notes by Steve Groebner are “R” rated and confirm that the Deepster has always been that way. D’Imperio also has his say, most affectingly about the cover photo.

No, I’m not a paid flack for the Little Drummer Boy but he does send me discs and heaps abuse on me from time to time.

What's the website for this? I remember DEEP posted it from time to time, but I can't locate it.

Real good playing on this one. Strong drums kicking good solos and a very strong trumpet section. In addition to Lew Tabackin and the above mentioned, Gary Smulyan on Baritone also sounds great.
