mikeweil Posted August 24, 2007 Report Posted August 24, 2007 Get those OJC CDs while you can. Fresh Sound did a reissue of the complete tentet stuff, and there are plenty other CDs with the pool of musicians involved. Quote
montg Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 A new interiew with Teddy Charles posted today at the jazzwax.com blog jazzwax.com Quote
Larry Kart Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 (edited) In that interview, Charles's chronology is way off at one point. Benny Goodman's infamous (among bandmembers) tour of Russia took place in 1961, not just before Charles joined Chubby Jackson back in 1949. Edited November 1, 2007 by Larry Kart Quote
Tom 1960 Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 There was an Atlantic Jazz reissue of the Tente LP which includes three bonus tracks, # 90983-2. I find Charles to be one of the most original of all jazz vibists, and can recommend any of his albums. The Original Jazz Classics CDs partly overlap, but swing like mad - his take on Third Stream Jazz had a lot more zest! That session with Shorty Rogers and Shelly Manne is a killer! This here, BTW, was the cover of his other Atlantic LP: up....I've been listening to the Shelly Manne/Shorty Rogers session. WOW Fantastic music. It's hard to avoid comparing this, at least superficially, with some Hutcherson recordings made 10-15 years later. The Charles music sounds amazingly contemporary, elements of modal jazz, atonality. And Manne manages to swing like mad. Glad to come across this thread once again. I was over at David's "Ghost Of Miles" website yesterday(Night Lights) and listened to the excellent program he does on Charles. If you haven't already done so, please give a listen. David played a few tracks I believe from the above mentioned recording and I now have it on order. I'm really looking forward to hearing this one. Quote

JohnS Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 I see that six tracks from Jazz Goes Russia have now appeared on a Jazzbeat cd coupled with the Atlantic sides. Quote
lkaven Posted January 18, 2009 Report Posted January 18, 2009 Teddy Charles has a new recording scheduled for release in February. On Smalls Records. Talk about longevity! Dances With Bulls This is true. There should be early copies available first at CD Baby about two weeks in front of the late-Feb release date. Teddy is playing in top form. I don't know why he hasn't made more records in the last 40 years. He certainly is up to it musically. I think you all will be pleased with this one. Luke Quote
relyles Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 I picked up the new Teddy Charles release the other day at my favorite local independent retailer. I purchased it as much for the presence of Chris Byars as for my intigue regarding Charles. With the exception of one Mingus tune, all of the songs were written by Charles and all the tracks were arranged by Byars. Overall a worthwhile recording. On my first listen there were not many surprises, but the quality of the individual performances is high and the compositions/arrangements kept me interested. I am looking forward to listening to this one more. Quote
Fer Urbina Posted May 30, 2017 Report Posted May 30, 2017 (edited) I don't know if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but there is an official CD reissue of Three for Duke. By Japanese WMG. Teasing the Korean Posted September 14, 2022 Report Posted September 14, 2022 Teddy Charles came up in the Booker Little recommendations thread.  We discussed how most of the Booker Littler/Booker Ervin Sounds of Inner City came from a Teddy Charles album called Metronome Presents Jazz in the Garden.  So I'm listening to random Teddy Charles things on the InterTubes - I am unfamiliar with him, aforementioned album aside - and much of what I'm hearing falls into my beloved Twilight Zone Jazz sub-genre, about which I've written prolifically around these parts. So my two questions are: 1. Was Teddy Charles doing the arrangements on these albums? 2. What are some of his most Twilight Zone Jazz-sounding albums?  The Tentet album sounds promising, based on digital needle-drops. Quote

Some of the most unique and amazing music of its kind I can think of. I don't know enough of the rest of Charles' other output to really comment, other than (from what I gather) it's not as compositionally-complex (or the arrangements aren't as elaborate) as that Tentet +3 material is. (But I'd LOVE to be proven otherwise, if there's other stuff by Teddy that I'm overlooking, because I just don't know it.) mikeweil Posted September 14, 2022 Report Posted September 14, 2022 (edited) I find all of his leader dates interesting, but they are all very different. There is a comprehensive discography at https://attictoys.com/teddy-charles-discography/ ...... he was very versatile, as you can see there. The trio with Hal Overton on Three For Duke is great and the recent Japanese reissue sounds excellent. 1 hour ago, Teasing the Korean said: 1. Joe Posted September 15, 2022 Report Posted September 15, 2022 COLLABORATION WEST is pretty fabulous. Early experiments in modality and serial techniques with assistance from Shelly Manne, Jimmy Giuffre, Shorty Rogers, Jimmy Raney... sadly not all tracks from these two sessions appear on the OJC CD. You'll also have to get EVOLUTION, which features some good-if-not-great work by an ensemble featuring J.R. Monterose and Charles Mingus. Â Quote
