Hardbopjazz Posted April 12, 2004 Report Posted April 12, 2004 I think Horace Silver is one of the greatest jazz performers and composers of all time. But, I find it hard to dig his stuff with vocals. Anyone else feel the same way? Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted April 12, 2004 Report Posted April 12, 2004 I've never heard any Horace with vocals. Anybody have any links to any sites with samples?? (Probably not, but it never hurts to ask.) Quote
AfricaBrass Posted April 12, 2004 Report Posted April 12, 2004 I have to admit, I do like some of Silver's stuff with Andy Bey doing the vocals. Especially TOTAL RESPONSE (Phase I). I also must admit that I probably don't dig it for the reasons intended. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted April 12, 2004 Report Posted April 12, 2004 Which tracks on this set have vocals?? Quote
Eloe Omoe Posted April 12, 2004 Report Posted April 12, 2004 Which tracks on this set have vocals?? The last three on disc #3, "The Happy Medium", "Peace" and "Old Mother Nature Calls", and three tracks on disc #4, "How Much Does Matter Relally Matter", "All" and "All in Time". The original records involved are "That Healin' Feelin' ", "Total Response", "All", and "Silver 'n Voices". Luca Quote
Adam Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 Wow, there's no thread under Artists for all things Horace Silver related. Someone should start one. Quote
Pete C Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 Unfortunately, Bey had to sing some pretty corny lyrics. Quote

Very scary, VERY scary!!! Quote
mikeweil Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 Silver's first attempt at vocals came about when Jon Hendricks couldn't find the time to do one Silver had requested - Senor Blues was the result, sung by Bill Henderson and included as a bonus track on the "Six Pieces of Silver CD". I can understand that one might find them corny, but he had a message, and I dig Bey and the others. Have 'em all. Quote
Eloe Omoe Posted April 13, 2004 Report Posted April 13, 2004 I can understand that one might find them corny, but he had a message, and I dig Bey and the others. Have 'em all. Me too. Corny they may be, but I find them refreshing in their naivete (and I happen to enjoy quite a lot the sound that Horace gets out of that RMI electric piano). Luca Quote
chris olivarez Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 Unfortunately, Bey had to sing some pretty corny lyrics. Maybe but he sang them pretty damn good and they swung like hell. Quote

BFrank Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 ... and I like them, too! The "U.S. of Mind" trilogy is due to be re-released this Fall by BN, I believe. So far, "Total Response" is the only one to be on CD - and that's a Japanese version. Quote

clinthopson Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 Horace is not the lyricist that Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter or Larry Hart were but I think many of his songs make their point, especially when sung by Jon Hendricks or Andy Bey. Quote
