The last time I saw him live about 10 years ago he wasn't in great shape but gave a stunning performance.

Pere Ubu were one of the best, although I only saw a later iteration live, and his subsequent solo albums with The Wooden Birds, The Pedestrians and Two Pale Boys made a big impact on me on their release.

I saw them once, at the Hacienda in 1989. I had to look it up, but it was around the time when "Love Love Love" came out - pretty much the only record of theirs I bought / heard. I don't recall much, other than his moustache, his high-pitched voice and an energetic performance.

One of the great bands spanning 5 decades plus David's solo work (including Richard Thompson, Red Crayola/Mayo Thompson etc) resonated for me

In June of '91, I was manager of a local record store.
One day, a rep for Polygram Records came in as
she would normally do on occasion. I was walking
from the back of the room up to the front counter,
and she said, "Maybe you might be interested?"

In short, she couldn't find anyone at any of the stores
that she visited who were interested in having dinner
with David Thomas.

I said, "Really? You couldn't find anyone?"
"Nope. They just give me a blank stare when I ask."
"Hell, yes, I'll do it."

I'd been a Pere Ubu fan for something like a dozen years.
First time seeing them at Gaspar's in Chicago in '78.
This Dallas show would be the "Worlds In Collision" tour.

Anyway, we sat for a couple of hours in a Thai restaurant
("Toy's Cafe") and had quirky convos about music and art.
That memory will always be with me. Sorry that he was
unwell for so long and it resulted in this.

Sad news; regrettably, I never saw him or Pere Ubu, but in college (latter 90s) was quickly schooled on what a great run of records they had.
