Ken Dryden Posted Monday at 02:34 PM Report Posted Monday at 02:34 PM (edited) I have been experiencing sudden power loss from my Denon receiver, the model number on the remote is AVR-S760H. Any ideas as to what might cause it? Research on line hasn't provided any help. It is well ventilated in a cool room and vacuumed for dust. All the plugs have been checked. Kevin Bresnahan Posted Monday at 05:12 PM Report Posted Monday at 05:12 PM A few questions for clarity... What do you mean by "sudden power loss"? Do you mean the volume is being reduced or that it is shutting off? What is the model of the receiver? The remote model will not help as that remote was probably used for all of their receivers that model year. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted Monday at 07:14 PM Report Posted Monday at 07:14 PM That's a huge remote! Quote

The unit is in use, not at a particularly high volume, then it suddenly cuts off. I was trying to see if it was in sleep mode, but not sure if it was or not. I did turn off the ECO mode. Quote
mjzee Posted Monday at 10:05 PM Report Posted Monday at 10:05 PM I had a similar problem on my Emotiva preamp. I thought it might be a fuse issue, but it wasn't something I could fix myself. I had to send it back to Emotiva, who replaced a board inside. If I had to guess what caused the problem, it might have been one too many power surges caused by neighborhood power issues. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted Tuesday at 12:39 AM Author Report Posted Tuesday at 12:39 AM This receiver has always been plugged into a surge protector and we haven't had any major surges according to our Ting monitor, which runs 24/7. Quote

But I have had a similar type of issue that I've never been able to solve. I stream music from Tidal through it and something always shuts the App down after about 20 minutes. Like you, I've turned off the sleep modes on that AND my TV, but it still keeps happening. Does NOT happen with any other streaming Apps, though. Very weird. Kevin Bresnahan Posted Tuesday at 01:21 PM Report Posted Tuesday at 01:21 PM Several of the one & two star reviews at Denon's AVR-S760H product page mention that their unit suddenly started going into "Protect mode" and shutting off. It sounds like you may be having that problem here. About the only thing I would try before sending it out for repair is to disconnect everything from it and see if it still happens. Sometimes, something you have connected to the main unit starts failing and causes a weird impedance on one of the inputs or outputs (speakers). If you disconnect everything and it still shuts down, it's probably a bad board. Quote
Dub Modal Posted Tuesday at 02:23 PM Report Posted Tuesday at 02:23 PM I guess the question is are repair prices typically worth it or is it better to get a new receiver? Obviously that's up to the individual owner, but what does a bad board typically cost to replace on these mass produced models? I've got a similar issue with a recent model Yamaha receiver (manufactured in the last 10 years) and haven't the first clue where to send it for repairs because the local shops that used to do that kind of thing are long gone. Meanwhile I'm using a 90s model Pioneer that keeps trucking along until I figure out a solution. Quote
mjzee Posted Tuesday at 02:56 PM Report Posted Tuesday at 02:56 PM That was the nice thing about buying from Emotiva, which sells direct. They repaired it themselves. They charged $300 + $32.40 for a replacement box and return shipping; I had to ship it to them on my own dime. This was in December 2019. They were very easy to work with. Quote
Dub Modal Posted Tuesday at 03:19 PM Report Posted Tuesday at 03:19 PM Of note to @Ken Dryden for my Yamaha with a similar issue I was able to reference troubleshooting steps in the manual, which allowed me to get the system to display the error code. The result I got was the dreaded "likely needs repair" but at least the problem is known. I would assume Denon would have a similar troubleshooting feature like the Yamaha but I'm not 100% on that. 21 minutes ago, mjzee said: That was the nice thing about buying from Emotiva, which sells direct.
