sgcim Posted Saturday at 12:20 AM Report Posted Saturday at 12:20 AM Been playing with a bass player who was the second husband of the late Japanese free jazz vocalist, Nozomi Oye. She sang with people like Sun Ra, Cecil Taylor (who called her the greatest singer in the world), Matthew Shipp, John Cage, and Knitting Factory people like John Zorn, and other members of the Lower East Side Avant Garde jazz scene, and also the Punk band Pigkill. They moved to LA in '92 where she got a day gig, and sang straight jazz in Beverly Hills supper clubs. Does this ring any bells with anyone? Quote

T.D. Posted Saturday at 04:54 PM Report Posted Saturday at 04:54 PM (edited) Never heard of her, though the John Cage context is the only one I'd have been aware of. Googled and hits are sparse, with many of the NY-related ones seemingly posted by the above-mentioned ex. Edited Saturday at 04:54 PM by T.D. Quote
rostasi Posted Saturday at 05:28 PM Report Posted Saturday at 05:28 PM (edited) John Penley said... My X Wife Nozomi Oye was not at the actual riot she was working at the Chamelion Bar on 6th St. that night. As the night went on she pullded down the shutters on the front of the bar and when people knocked she would look to see who it was and if they were people she knew Nozomi let them in. It soon looked like an emergency room with drunk victims of police brutality bleeding onto clear bar towels which she gave out. At one point a gang of cops started banging on the bar front with night stick so people barricaded it and after a while the cops left. On hell of a night for both of us. Nozomi died in Cali about 10 years ago. (written in 2022 about the Tompkins Square Park Riot) Edited Saturday at 05:35 PM by rostasi Quote
