mjazzg Posted Friday at 04:36 PM Report Posted Friday at 04:36 PM Another new release https://panafrikanpeoplesarkestra.bandcamp.com/album/live-at-widney-high-december-26th-1971 Rapidly becoming the most documented ensemble of the 70s Quote
Pim Posted Friday at 05:47 PM Report Posted Friday at 05:47 PM I’ve got a lot of Pan African stuff now but not from this period. Interesting song selections too. Not an instant buy but definitely a maybe. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted Friday at 05:49 PM Report Posted Friday at 05:49 PM '71 is the intriguing factor for me. I'll probably pick it up once Dusty has it. Quote
Pim Posted Friday at 06:10 PM Report Posted Friday at 06:10 PM Equinox is a Coltrane favorite of mine. The Arkestra version sounds pretty cool. The alto sax solo (that ain’t no tenor is it?) sounds awful like the dude doesn’t know how to play. It reminds of how I tried to solo when I was a kid. Will have to wait for more samples I guess. felser Posted Saturday at 01:09 AM Report Posted Saturday at 01:09 AM I agree with the '71 intrigue and the concerns about the sax solo (although it sounds like he's having the time of his live). I'm surprised how good the sound quality is. I'd love to see a CD release, but will plan to plunk down my $12 for the download in its absence. Quote
JSngry Posted Saturday at 02:25 AM Report Posted Saturday at 02:25 AM Nothing wrong with that alto player that some more work won't fix ...hope that he/she got it done. I like how they have a "there" there, even though it's a long way away at this point. The trombonist, otoh...even more work to do...but ok then Any chance that this is a youth/student band? Quote

No time right now, but will dig out my copy of The Dark Tree and see if anything is said about the PAPA c. 1971. It can't be all youth/students with Butch Morris in the band? Lester Robertson and Linda Hill are names I recognize from later Nimbus recordings (could have been students at the time?). But most of the rest are unfamiliar. Quote
felser Posted Saturday at 04:38 AM Report Posted Saturday at 04:38 AM Bryant and Brown were regulars, played with Tapscott on 'The Giant Has Awakened' and for years after, but per Jim's observation, the concert was recorded at a high school, and the various horn soloists don't have it together yet. JSngry Posted Saturday at 12:48 PM Report Posted Saturday at 12:48 PM The drummer also seems not particularly developed yet either, in spots any way. Quote
JSngry Posted Saturday at 01:52 PM Report Posted Saturday at 01:52 PM Where y'all seeing the personnel for this one? Quote
