"Ignore" has always worked for me. OTOH, how do you "demand an apology"?

Up thread "far fewer assholes" is kind of a funny endorsement.

To clarify, I believe it's O.K. to ask for "an apology". What does "demand" mean?

To insist, with...heightened assertiveness.

Especially when the game seems to get an apology for something that didn't happen.

Some folks act like they expect to be right all the time, to get apologies than give them

Personally, I think it's vanity. If you have a shot take it. And then move onĀ

Yes but meanwhile this is third person (all good contributors) I know of who has left the board because of something you said.Ā  You, obviously, are knowledgeable, helpful and valuable to this board but not all opinions need to be said forcefully.

As we have discussed earlier, misunderstandings are easy on boards like this. Ā We cannot see each other or hear the tone of how something is expressed. Ā Non-native English speakers are particularly prone to misunderstandings. Ā  It is quite common for people to take offense on boards like this and leave, even if the reason is a misunderstanding. Ā

I attribute the fact that more people may have left the board because of an interaction with Jim than with most of the rest of us to Ā (1) Jim posts more than the rest of us do and (2) he often expresses strong opinions. Ā  Most of us appreciate Jim's participation in that regard very much. Ā Sure, we need to make an effort not to offend other people. Ā But making any sort of judgement in this case is not straightforward (IMO). Ā Ā

ThanksĀ  John. I really don't traffic in "personal attacks". Ideas on the other hand are fair game. But if I tell you "that's a stupid idea", it's not you that's stupid. It's the idea. Hell I have stupid ideas all the time myself.ore than you know.

But. you know, cop to it and move on

Don't know why they left, but I miss chewy, Bev, Magnificent Goldberg & soulpope. Others not so much.

Chewy lurks.

Bev is enjoying retirement.

MG is, I think. Slowing down with ageĀ

Soulpope has volunteered his absence ....

Part of the problem with regular posters like soulpope choosing to leave is that we aren't getting new members, so whenever any of us leave for an extended period, it creates a bit of a void.

FWIW, there is a huge waiting list of people wanting to get on the forum but a cursory look at the applicants' info shows that it's faked and the applicant is simply looking to spam the heck out of us, so I skip approving them.

Again, if anyone knows of someone legitimately trying to join the forum, contact me with their E-mail address.

BTW - the biggest problem with trying to screen these applicants is that almost all of them use gmail e-mail addresses. A gmail E-mail is almost impossible to Google to find a real person so I generally skip over them.

I think it is safe to say that Larry is not doing well. That's about all I feel safe in saying.

Paul Secor kinda fell victim to a delusion that I was coming to his house to shoot him and then decided that maybe he needed less stress in his life. It was all very public here.

People are getting older. Some old people get weird about shit. Some work with it, some don't. It could be you. It could be me. My suggestion is to roll with all you can, and laugh at the rest.

Ā

Oh, aloc. No idea what happened to him. I do hope he's well!

I also deeply regret Soulpope's withdrawal due to the 'bullshit controversy' ā€“ see above. Now I'm also particularly reminded of the 'exit' of the honorable Paul Secor...

Call me crazy, but I really miss Mnytime (I know he was "troubled" but he knew a lot and was a good writer) I think I read where Jim said he had died. A lot of others I miss also. It feels crazy that this board has been going for twenty-three years, even longer for those who were on the Blue Note Bulletin Board. I feel life is flashing by the older I get.

I'm pretty sure that Mnytime was playing us with a long con, although I don't know what his endgame was. He sounded like he had connections in the industry, but quite a few of my connections at the time didn't think he was right with everything he reported. For instance, he reported that Columbia couldn't wait to get rid of Wynton Marsalis but everyone I asked said that their connections at Columbia didn't have any problems with him and that his discs sold OK, though they faded in the end. Then the story changed and it was his girlfriend that was working at Columbia and she didn't like Wynton. Then his girlfriend became his wife. Then it was his ex-girlfriend. The story seemed to change and change.

His untimely demise was also very weird. At first, he was sick (was it cancer?). Then he had a car accident. Then his "brother" came on using his account to say he died, yet his brother wrote exactly like Mnytime did and seemed to have the same insider connections. It just sounded like a story concocted to kill off his persona. On top of that, his brother disappeared when he was asked about his brother's services. All in all, it didn't sound like he was being honest with us.

Mnytime wrote me a bunch of crazy personal messages, including how Mohammed Ali, Michael Jackson, and other famous people were his close friends, and how he almost died the other day from some bizarre disaster or illness (a different one almost every week), etc., etc. Ā  Remember when he came on the Jazz Corner board to say that he didn't understand why his relatives hadn't arrived on their plane, then naming one of the planes that had just crashed into the trade tower on 9/11, and pretending that he first heard about it from us? Ā And it goes on and on.Ā

He was 100% fake.Ā

Co-sign. Especially distressing to see non-problematic and longtime members (Paul Secor, Soulpope, etc) leaving the board because of a moderatorā€™s tone of discourse. (We lost another valuable and civil contributor because of *two* moderators, one of whom is no longer active.) I stick around regardless because this is still my favorite jazz forum, a lot of great content gets posted here, and nobodyā€™s perfect. So spare me sanctimonious edicts and condescendingly homey asidesā€”I get that Iā€™m free to leave at any time. (I have no inclination to do so.) Iā€™ve been wary of stating this and honking off the resident sheriff, but given that Medjuck, surely one of our kindest and gentlest posters, has said something, I feel the need to back him up. A moderator driving away longtime civil members and always positing it all as delusions, vanity, a misguided showdown of pride, a misunderstanding, or some other personal failing on the membersā€™ part is not a healthy pattern.

This forum has had a remarkably long run, even if itā€™s not as active or as populated as it used to be. Given that 22 years is about a century in social media time, itā€™s amazing that it persists. Thatā€™s in large part because of its member core, so yeah, itā€™s a bummer to see people like Paul and Soulpope leave because of discourse clashes with a moderator. The forum will fall victim to time as all of us will, and the world will go on as it always does, etc. All the more important to speak your piece while weā€™re here.Ā

I still post here occasionally, but it's mostly in the "what rock are you listening to" and the photo threads.Ā  I got tired of being agitated by a few others here, some of whom are still here and some who seem to have moved on.Ā  I'm sure I did my share of agitating others as well.

But many of the people here that I have truly enjoyed engaging with have become Facebook friends, and the interactions have continued there.Ā  And many of those I've ended up meeting in person over the years.Ā  I'm happy about that most of all.

I don't post as often as I might, but I was so happy to meet HutchFan, who tipped me off to a David Liebman concert that was much closer to me than the one I was considering attending in Nashville. We had a great time and the bonus was that most of the show appeared on the 2 CD set Expansions: The Dave Liebman Group Live. We have attended other concerts and I hope he makes it to the solo piano concert that my wife and I are underwriting on September 11th, which I can't announce here until the last of the paperwork is signed.

Well, reading Jim's frank, clear, and very informed opinions about music is one of the main reasons why I come here. Ā  So the sword can cut both ways. Ā
