mjazzg Posted March 13 Report Posted March 13 One of our most prolific posters hasn't posted since 9th February and I for one miss his input and knowledge. I hope he's just away on a long holiday. Anyone know of his wellbeing? Quote
HutchFan Posted March 13 Report Posted March 13 I've been wondering about his absence too. I hope he's just taking a temporary break! Â Quote
jlhoots Posted March 13 Report Posted March 13 He replied to my PM a while back & said his wife had been ill but was better. He also indicated he'd been turned off by somebody here & might not return. Quote

He also indicated he'd been turned off by somebody here & might not return. That would be me, most likely. Something about misinterpreting my use of the word "bullshit" (or something similar) as a general comment and he seemed to be convinced that somehow I meant it personally towards a friend of his. He sorta demanded an apology or something and refused to accept that his interpretation of the comment was simply not correct. So there, I'm an asshole and you should never believe me. Tell him Gomer says hey. We got grits on the stove. Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 13 Report Posted March 13 Well that absolves me that my comment about Garret Cole going on the shelf for all of 2025 was welcome news wasn't a triggering event for the Yankee fans' departure. Quote

jlhoots Posted March 13 Report Posted March 13 This is a little like a recent Liberty Mutual commercial. Not sure who the "babies" are here. Personally I got a lot from soulpope's input. Never had a problem with him. BTW, who's Garret Cole? Quote
JSngry Posted March 13 Report Posted March 13 Soulpope is welcome to resume posting at any time. Bibbitty! Quote

Pim Posted March 14 Report Posted March 14 Hope he's okay and will show up soon again. I miss his enthuiastic responses. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 14 Report Posted March 14 (edited) It's too bad when members feel they cannot post here because of certain interactions/dynamics, and it does happen from time to time. Hell, I almost split like 18 years ago (similar issues with a couple of board members) but am glad I stayed (and matured). The community is hella weird but a lifeline in a lot of ways. And compared to another music board I was on, far fewer assholes here than elsewhere. Edited March 14 by clifford_thornton Quote

T.D. Posted March 14 Report Posted March 14 With the ignore list available, I don't really understand getting involved with feuds and the like. OTOH, if one starts getting worked up about various forum dynamics, some time off could be a good thing (I do it periodically). Quote
mjazzg Posted March 14 Author Report Posted March 14 I wonder how mindful those of us with English as a first language (and yes that includes US English đ) are of our friends who aren't posting in their first language, not least because their English is usually so good. It's so easy for nuance and subtlety to get lost online, even if we were all native speakers Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 14 Report Posted March 14 Good point -- I've certainly (accidentally) rubbed some non-English native speakers the wrong way on here before. All of it based in sarcasm and bullshitting but one person's bs is face value for another. Quote

And sarcasm...I used to enjoy being sarcastic (it's funny -at least to the speaker- and easy), but over the years I've almost ceased using it in face-to-face conversation because it tends to rub people the wrong way. Even more so online. Quote

It's so easy for nuance and subtlety to get lost online, even if we were all native speakers language is one thing, cultural differences are another... obviously, we meet here because we have some common interests... and obviously, that includes an interest in American culture in the case of this board (and, for example, soulpope has loads of interests like that from Edward Hopper to some of those American sports)... but there are some conversation on this board that you can only understand if you've grown up knowing which type of highly processed sauce goes with what type of meat in which region of the US... and that's something they don't teach us in school and that's ok. But it does lead to things being lost in translation.  Quote
JSngry Posted March 14 Report Posted March 14 Otoh, when somebody gets "aggressive" about something that they misunderstand and then double down on that aggression after the misunderstanding is clearly explained, I just figure that for whatever reason they are looking for a "fight" of some sort, and, no, sorry, not that fight, and not like that. Participation here is is entirely voluntary. We've had to ban...less than 10 people over the years, probably around 5, maybe even less. So if anybody wants to leave, that's their choice. There are no "victims", other than self- inflictions. One pretty basic rule of common courtesy though - don't demand an apology for something that didn't happen. Rings don't get kissed here. Quote
jlhoots Posted March 15 Report Posted March 15 "Ignore" has always worked for me. OTOH, how do you "demand an apology"? Up thread "far fewer assholes" is kind of a funny endorsement. Quote

Yes but meanwhile this is third person (all good contributors) I know of who has left the board because of something you said. You, obviously, are knowledgeable, helpful and valuable to this board but not all opinions need to be said forcefully. Gheorghe Posted March 15 Report Posted March 15 I miss him too. The absurd thing is, I live in the same town (Vienna) but don´t know more about him than his postings here. I don´t know his last name, I don´t know in what part of the town he lives, I never saw him personally. Hope he is well. About callin´somebody asshole or say that he sais bullshit.......so what ? If Miles told things he often didn´t mean it like that.  I know about cultural differenČies but Viena is an amalgam of so many ethnies, like let´s say New York or Miami. So meet all kind of guys and learn each other from culture, food and so on.... I wouldn´t turn my back if somebody here might say I said bullshit. But on the other hand, I am a musician and that´s also a difference. We not so careful. How said Blakey "If you do a mistake, do it LOUD"..... Quote
