Hardbopjazz Posted Thursday at 01:04 AM Report Posted Thursday at 01:04 AM Another great leaves. He was 82. RIP Roy Quote
mjzee Posted Thursday at 01:37 AM Report Posted Thursday at 01:37 AM Picked this up recently. R.I.P. Quote
felser Posted Thursday at 03:08 AM Report Posted Thursday at 03:08 AM RIP to a musician who was interesting in all of his eras. I especially enjoyed the Atlantic and the early Polydor albums, ca. 1967-1974. Quote
JSngry Posted Thursday at 04:26 AM Report Posted Thursday at 04:26 AM In real time, I lost interest as the 70s wire on, and only regained some of it. But I know for a fact how immensely popular he was back in the day. In fact my single favorite Ayers cut was from that time! Quote
GA Russell Posted Thursday at 05:18 AM Report Posted Thursday at 05:18 AM RIP Roy Ayers! I saw him twice with Herbie Mann, when they had recorded these two albums. Quote
mjazzg Posted Thursday at 07:18 AM Report Posted Thursday at 07:18 AM So much great music. He was the soundtrack to the Jazz Dance/Acid Jazz/Rare Groove scene over here in the 80s which where I first heard him. But the leader albums on Atlantic and the work with Mann became my favourite Quote
Rabshakeh Posted Thursday at 10:07 AM Report Posted Thursday at 10:07 AM A real favourite of my younger brother's, for the reasons @mjazzg identifies. Sad news. Quote
mhatta Posted Thursday at 01:39 PM Report Posted Thursday at 01:39 PM RIP. His work with Herbie Mann is good (Live At The Whisky A Go Go is truly amazing), but I think his collaboration with Jack Wilson is always underrated. It was a very good combination. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted Thursday at 03:19 PM Report Posted Thursday at 03:19 PM Agree about the Jack Wilson collaboration. Clearly an influence on a lot of people. RIP. Anyone here read My Life in the Sunshine by Nabil Ayers? Pretty interesting book. Quote
JSngry Posted Thursday at 05:33 PM Report Posted Thursday at 05:33 PM I think that Virgo Vibes might still be underlooked? Quote

I used "The Ringer" from that album on my BFT 237. Tolliver, Joe Henderson, Hancock, Workman, Bruno Carr. Great lineup, and they deliver. The other two Atlantic albums, 'Stoned Soul Picnic' and 'Daddy Bug', are also good, but 'Virgo Vibes' is the pick of the litter. Quote
JSngry Posted Friday at 02:40 AM Report Posted Friday at 02:40 AM + Harold Land, Jack Wilson, Buster Williams, & Donald Bailey!!! Quote
mikeweil Posted Friday at 02:48 PM Report Posted Friday at 02:48 PM (edited) R.I.P. IMO he had the most beautiful vibes of all before his moving to R&B, and still sounded much like it on his electrified gear. That, together with the rhythmic aspects of his style, makes him one of my favourites. And he always projected positive vibes. A really great career. I love this live set with a great, grooving band: Edited Friday at 02:49 PM by mikeweil Quote

Royal Oak Posted Friday at 08:02 PM Report Posted Friday at 08:02 PM Sad news, one of the few originals I got to see, in 1998. As has been said upthread, he was very popular in the UK. I know he played here as recently as 2022, at a middle-aged festival near where I live. Quote
sgcim Posted Friday at 09:06 PM Report Posted Friday at 09:06 PM RIP. I did a gig with his keyboard player, Mark Adams. He was so good, I made one of my students take private lessons with him. Quote

Peter Friedman Posted 13 hours ago Report Posted 13 hours ago His albums with Jack Wilson, Curtis Amy, and West Coast Vibes are my favorites by Roy Ayers. R.I.P. Quote
