You say it irks you that it’s called complete when it may not be but earlier in the thread you said you planned to buy the cd. Isn’t that slightly contradictory?

I like the music, so more music from that night is good enough for me, especially when it has Tina Brooks on it.

I just don't like the fact that they are advertising this as complete when it is clearly not complete. When they released the complete Lee Morgan performance at the Lighthouse, it was actually all of the music recorded those nights, so they do know what "complete" means. :)

As for why I don't want to try and contact anyone at Blue Note, well, my latest attempts to contact them have not gone anywhere, so I don't feel like trying anymore. I was honest when I told you to give it a try. Maybe it's just me that they don't respond to?

Sides 4, 5 & 6 are all previously unissued tracks, which seems to indicate that they're going with 4 tracks that were previously "rejected". That said, I have to wonder if "rejected" here means that they simply chose a different take as is the case for "Birks' Works", "Lady Be Good" & "36-23-36"?

Which tracks on sides 4, 5 and 6 does Tina Brooks play on??

I posted the question about the additional tracks being rejected tracks and this is the reply from Joe Harley on FB:

“Alfred approved and sequenced the original 5 track album. Later, after Alfred had passed, Michael Cuscuna added three great additional tracks to the CD version of the original. Michael was a dear friend of mine and we discussed this reissue before he passed. The additional 6 tracks are very worthy of being released. You can hear one of them now (‘The Take Off’) I did not include takes where there are technical problems like the tape running out or tape starting halfway through. I did not include one take because Michael and I agreed it was not worthy of release.”

I don’t have the US re-issue, just the 1993 TOCJ, which only includes the original five.

Sounds like you might be the new "Blue Note whisperer". :)

He’s been responsive on the few times I’ve asked him a question on FB.

I'm tempted by more Tina Brooks

Me too, definitely — but it’ll depend on the price-point of the CD’s.  And there’s no way I’m paying as much as the recent McCoy/JoeHen discovery, for just 38 minutes of Tina that’s new (but mostly alternates).

I love Tina, but there are limits.

CD set pre-order  is $21.30 on CDJapan, $24.99 on Dustygroove. LP set pre-order is $72.98  on Amazon, $75.98 on Dustygroove.  Has not shown up on the Alliance Entertainment (DeepDiscount, importCDs, Collector's Choice) sites yet.  The fact that the Amazon LP pre-order price is less than DG gives me hope they will end up being the best place to pre-order the CD from.

I'm cool with a Jackson/Lincoln or so (about what I paid for the Jones/Farrell and Henderson/Tyner).

Me too.  Will order from DeepDiscount, along with the Strata-East CD upgrades, next time they send me a discount coupon.

What does this refer to?

A $20 bill (Jackson) a $5 bill (Lincoln), being willing to pay around $25 for the Burrell set, and Jim's quick sense of humor.

Discogs has this to say:

So E1, E2 and F2 are three new tracks with Tina, and A1, B1, B2 and C1 are the ones that were previously releases? IIRC, Tina barely plays on Lover Man.

I have the CD edition and I find the sleevenotes unclear about what is new. I think I have worked out that the whole of the second CD is additional to the original release but could be wrong. What is going on with supposed heavily researched releases with extensive interviews with the musicians’ children but totally baffling on the provenance of the music! The lack of discographical info on the recent Miles Davis ‘54 release is similarly annoying.

Just for the history:

a. The 1987 CD release info from Discogs]:

Some timings differ at various CD releases. Verified by Spotify.

1. Birk's Works 9:15/9:48 [5tet with Tina Brooks and Bobby Timmons]
2. Lady Be Good 8:15/right one=9:59 [5tet with Tina Brooks and Bobby Timmons]
3. Lover Man 9:48/right one=8:23 [5tet with Tina Brooks and Bobby Timmons]
*4. Swingin' 9:48/9:52 [5tet with Tina Brooks and Bobby Timmons]

*7. If You Could See Me Now 5:25/5:29 [4tet with Roland Hanna]
8. 36-23-36 3:35/3:49 [4tet with Roland Hanna]

b. The 2025 "complete" release (= 6 newly released tracks = 2 with Hanna + 4 with Brooks/Timmons) - (info from Discogs and Spotify):

In regard to the timings: at first I was surprised by the Hallelujah reduced length (8:19 in 2025) but this is a printing error as confirmed by Spotify. For some reason, just this track's length is missing from most of the early CD releases). Also at Spotify the durations are differ from the printed ones on the 2025 sleeves I checked at Discogs.

Thank you for this ... my copy of the new release is due for delivery today, unheard Tina Brooks will be nice.

This is now two BN artist recordings of what I think was Junior Parker's biggest hit, "Next Time You See Me" - a part of me really wishes Tina was on that one.
