We’re excited for Tone Poet Society members to be the first to know about the April 11 release of On View At The Five Spot Café: The Complete Masters, a special expanded Tone Poet Vinyl Edition of guitarist Kenny Burrell’s 1959 hard bop summit with drummer Art Blakey! The 3-LP, 2-CD & digital sets present the complete recorded performances from that evening for the first time in any format including 6 previously unissued tracks. According to Michael Cuscuna/Michel Ruppli's discography, there were only 5 "unissued" tunes left in the can, so we're likely to be getting at least one tune that was originally deemed "rejected".
The 5 unissued tunes are:

from set 2
Lover Man
from set 3
The Take Off
from set 4
Our Delight
The Next Time You See Me, Things Won't Be The Same

Among the rejected song titles are few that are unique and several that would be alternates. The unique/previously unissued songs that show as "rejected" are:
Tricotism
The Take Off/36-23-36 (a different take is listed above as an "unissued" tune)
The Next Time You See Me, Things Won't Be The Same (two different takes also listed above as "unissued" tunes)
If You Could See Me Now
Love Walked In

All other "rejected" tunes would be alternates of previously issued tunes on the US CD & SACD releases.

FWIW, I think "The Take Off" is a variation on "The Theme", played at the end of the sets because it is listed as "36-23-36/Theme" as the 5th set closer.

I'm actually more excited about this than I expected to be. I'm in for the two cd set. Why not buy some of this material for the . . .fourth or fifth time(?)

Interesting that both Freddie Roach (on the original Brown Sugar LP) and KB chose the Junior Parker tune "Next Time You See Me" (and I've never ever seen the whole lyric line listed as the title, fwiw).   And 5 years apart.  I am pretty sure I discovered Junior Parker after I heard the Roach recording.

No mention if this represents unheard Tina Brooks?

I really like this CD so I will be buying the new 2-CD set for sure.

There were 5 unreleased tracks with Tina Brooks. All are listed as "rejected". All of them are alternates of tunes already released.

I'm intrigued.  Not sure I really need it, but it would be nice to revisit the experience.

Now if they'd only do the same with the Vanguard Argo date (same corporate parent these days).  Master tapes probably burnt in the fire, sadly.

Not to question the judgement of Alfred Lion or Michael Cuscuna, but I honestly believe that many of the "rejected" tracks are worth listening to. Maybe a bit rough, but some of the individual solos could be great, especially now that most of the people involved have passed away.

As for the rejected items from the same period, i.e. around 1960, including

more Jackie McLean -- "Jackie's Bag" has two rejected items (maybe not good) and "Swing, Swang, Swingin'" has one (Tune Up).

more Art Blakey -- there are some rejected items, and the originally rejected and recently released "Just Coolin'" was okay.

more Horace Silver -- "Blowin' The Blues Away" has one rejected track, "Repetition".

more Kenny Burrell -- A quartet recording is rejected, Kenny with Tommy Flanagan, George Duvivier and Elvin Jones!

more Jimmy Smith -- "Home Cookin'" has a rejected item, may contain an unheard Percy France solo.

more Sonny Red -- one rejected session contains Hank Jones on piano, something of a rarity in the BN roaster.

mysterious Leon Eason -- only issued as a single 45s.

and tons of Three Sounds rejects -- well, they might not be much different from the master takes...

Cd's are mostly released simultanously so that's early April this year.

The issue date for all formats is April 11.

I will probably purchase the vinyl, particularly if the cd is in a digipak.

Agreed.  IIRC, that first Bobby Hutcherson album, "The Kicker", was marked as rejected, but sounded good to me when it finally came out on CD 35 years later.

Count me in as another ‘Kicker fan’. Though not as exciting as his later works it’s a highly enjoyable record that I would not want to miss. Excellent version of Bedouin 😍

Was it really marked "rejected" and not "unissued"? There's a big difference between the two.

I seriously think BN should start a "rejected" series.  Release it all!  Be clear that these tracks or sessions were not considered worthy of release in their time, and that Alfred Lion would not approve of their release today.  Then release it all.  Let us derive from them what we can.  Perhaps there's a date where most of the musicians are good but there's one who's a clunker.  

What I hear in many of these sessions is the sound of another time, which simply cannot be reproduced today.  They're precious.

Or to put it another way, were all Prestige, Riverside and Savoy dates fabulous?  No, but they all got eventually released.  BN announced that these dates weren't good enough; the other labels just kept their mouths shut.  Let the listeners decide.

It kinda irks me that they call this "complete" and include tracks that were previously deemed "rejected", yet there are clearly a bunch of other rejected tracks not being reissued.

Blue Note needs to make up their mind - either release it all (complete) or don't call it complete.

You say it irks you that it’s called complete when it may not be but earlier in the thread you said you planned to buy the cd. Isn’t that slightly contradictory?

Sides 1 & 2 are the original Blue Note LP. Next are the four bonus tracks of the first CD reissue. The five tracks that are new are listed as unissued in the Tom Lord Discogrsphy,  not as rejected. 

That said, what I liked about the CD reissue was that the tracks with Brooks and Timmons were first, then the tracks with Hanna, who gets better sound from the bad upright piano at the Five Spot. This New issues is not in session order as far as I can see.

You're right, Ruppli shows it as unissued, so I was misremembering.
