JSngry Posted 15 hours ago Report Posted 15 hours ago They were reference tapes, not masters. And the story has too many dead people and too much past-tense for me to give any credibility. Hell, it could have been Joe or Woody, hard up for dough. Bottom line - imo it's a bootleg. Not that that's ever stopped me before... Quote

"Turns out" , eh? Who would be alive to confirm or contradict this? Dead men tell no tales. Color me skeptical, at best. This tape is from the Both/And club in San Francisco and like the Lee Morgan Both/And tapes, it was recorded the week before the band went into The Lighthouse and made a live record. And for the same reason, why you have tracks they didn't record at The Lighthouse because they were recording new material which is why you get these killing versions of "Power to the People" and "Punjab". And yes, there is more, an absolutely killing up tempo swing version of "Afro-Centric" for one. The Freddie Hubbard bootleg LPs "Hot Horn" and "Extended" are also recorded at the Both/And. 12 hours ago, Kevin Bresnahan said: According to the story at the Real Gone website, Everest bought the tapes from Orrin Keepnews. Doesn't that make it legit or did Orrin not own the rights at that time? Seems like bullshit to me. As I mentioned, this recording is from the Both/And in San Francisco and was probably never in Orrin's possession or better yet, nothing Orrin ever had the rights to. If this was more music from The Lighthouse, Concord Records would have every right to be all over this and back in the day, Fantasy would have been all over Everest. The real question is whether Real Gone just did a straight up rip-off of ripped off material. Edited 14 hours ago by david weiss Quote
JSngry Posted 14 hours ago Report Posted 14 hours ago I wanted to use the Morgan tapes as an speculative example but didn't want to overreach the speculation. So now it's the Jazz Detective's time to step in and rescue all the known tapes? But more to the point - are all the Both/And tapes collated/codified by some Master Collector? Quote

Dead on in this case.... I was tasked with listening to a series of these a while back (from one source). The sound quality is not great, I believe this was a couple of mics in the room situation and not an each individual instrument being miced thing. I believe they recorded one night for a radio broadcast. The usual stuff was great of course but as always, there are clearance issues or the labels in question were not enticed. There is more Lee Morgan (not much) then what has been on the various bootlegs but after the huge Lighthouse set, I don't think Blue Note was interested in releasing what is essentially the same material again. It would probably be Atlantic Records for the Hubbard and Concord for the Henderson and who even knows where to begin.... There were other recordings as well but I'm not sure I should get into that except to say there was nothing else exceptional or mind-blowing.... Quote
