Gato Barbieri - Standards Lost and Found 2

The previous entry was a Buenos Aires 1961 concert, so a very, very early period of Gato. Now we will get a 1968 recording during his Italian period, so we can expect a crispy free-jazz session

Limited edition 2LP set pressed on 180g premium vinyl - cut and pressed by Pallas Group, Germany

Gatefold sleeve with 12" size booklet, each copy hand-numbered + hand-glued photo on cover. A rare and little-known previously unreleased session by Gato Barbieri playing standards as opposed to his widely known work within Latin and free form jazz

Recorded in Rome during Spring 1968, together with Franco D'Andrea on piano, Giovanni Tommaso on bass, and Pepito Pignatelli on drums. This release fills a gap in Barbieri's discography

The artist we met in his first work as a leader, In Search Of The Mystery (1967), moved in the realm of pure improvisation, going in the direction of the spirituality of Albert Ayler and Pharoah Sanders

In the Roman sessions presented here, however, Barbieri recovers his original matrix deeply rooted in the language of John Coltrane and, in part, in that of early Ornette Coleman. I think both the description as the title tells its not very free?

"Language of Coltrane and early Ornette Coleman" still sounds pretty free to me. But maybe it's just a dream-talk from my side.

Yeah, I've heard some of this material and it's not very free but it is quite strong. Glad to see it's getting a proper issue; these sides originally appeared as transcription discs on RAI.

Also, I heard that the Ra Maeght Strut box is seeing a general release and will be available in non-RSD stores. Furthermore, a CD box is also coming that will include a couple additional hours (!) of music.

Nice! Definitely was planning to get the CD version of Maeght, but that sweetens the deal.

Would be nice to get a remaster/reissue of Gato's Obsession, a genuinely free session from Milan in '67 that has only seen release on Affinity with one of their absolutely hideous sleeves.

yes, I was told that if they did an LP version of the complete concerts it would total up to 10 vinyl slabs rather than six (!). 

Obsession is a fun one. It's very short IIRC, so it might make sense as something to be combined with another interesting period session.
