felser Posted January 21 Report Posted January 21 Garth Hudson of The Band has passed at 87. He was the last of the original members. https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/21/entertainment/garth-hudson-death/index.html Quote
mjzee Posted January 21 Report Posted January 21 Very sad news. I would label him a genius. Throughout the Dylan Live 1966 box, I could absorb myself in his playing alone. He was a rock version of a great jazz improvisor. RIP. Quote
John L Posted January 21 Report Posted January 21 RIP. This makes me feel very old. I saw the young Band many many times live in concert. Garth was always amazing. Quote
Guy Berger Posted Saturday at 03:27 AM Report Posted Saturday at 03:27 AM RIP. The only one who didn’t sing, right? Quote

BFrank Posted Saturday at 05:21 AM Report Posted Saturday at 05:21 AM My memory of Garth is seeing Marianne Faithfull at the Bottom Line in 1987 with an all-star band of: Dr. John, Garth Hudson, Marvin Stamm, Fernando Saunders, Bill Frisell and J.T. Lewis Quote

Milestones Posted Sunday at 12:24 AM Report Posted Sunday at 12:24 AM (edited) Not sure whether any of them were truly good singers in the traditional sense--maybe Levon, though he sounded like he was 75 when he was in his 30s. But it worked for The Band. Robbie is at his best on his first solo album, especially the primarily talked "Somewhere Down the Crazy River." Garth's contributions to The Band were enormous.
