Very sad news.  I would label him a genius.  Throughout the Dylan Live 1966 box, I could absorb myself in his playing alone.  He was a rock version of a great jazz improvisor.  RIP.

My memory of Garth is seeing Marianne Faithfull at the Bottom Line in 1987 with an all-star band of: Dr. John, Garth Hudson, Marvin Stamm, Fernando Saunders, Bill Frisell and J.T. Lewis

Not sure whether any of them were truly good singers in the traditional sense--maybe Levon, though he sounded like he was 75 when he was in his 30s.  But it worked for The Band.

Robbie is at his best on his first solo album, especially the primarily talked "Somewhere Down the Crazy River."

Garth's contributions to The Band were enormous.
