JSngry Posted January 1 Report Posted January 1 RIP What was the correct pronunciation of his first name? Quote
mjzee Posted January 1 Report Posted January 1 Reading his Wikipedia page now; I had no idea he was American. Quite the discography. RIP. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barre_Phillips Quote
JSngry Posted January 1 Report Posted January 1 Didn't he do a RCA session with Sonny Rollins? One of the vault sessions? Maybe I'm wrong about that... Quote

I was thinking about "Travelin' Light" and "Winter Wonderland" with David Izenzon on bass and Stu Martin on drums. Quote

rostasi Posted January 2 Report Posted January 2 I had no idea that he was living in Las Cruces - a place I visit pretty often. Wonder if he ever showed up for special events in the square. Was just there in November. Quote
T.D. Posted January 2 Report Posted January 2 RIP. More sad news to open 2025 (2024 was a tough year). Quote
mjzee Posted January 2 Report Posted January 2 I'm guessing that, growing up, he was Barry Phillips. Quote
OliverM Posted January 3 Report Posted January 3 RIP Very nicely written obituary in Le Monde, in French, for those who can access it, by Francis Marmande: https://www.lemonde.fr/disparitions/article/2025/01/02/mort-de-barre-phillips-passeur-de-contrebasse_6478722_3382.html Quote
clifford_thornton Posted January 4 Report Posted January 4 A great player whose artistry coursed throughout much of my listening. Glad to have seen him a couple of times, including a solo release concert for his final ECM solo album, though I didn't actually get the opportunity to speak with or thank him. I think he moved to Las Cruces a year or two ago. RIP. Quote
