This release is excellent! The band is tight and swings incredibly, due in large part to Mel Lewis! The sound is amazing as well because of the excellent job Wally Heider did in capturing the band. Terry Gibbs is now 100 and has a weekly “call” in Question and Answer show on Facebook on Saturday’s 1:00 pm PST. His memory and humor make for a very entertaining show! I highly recommend checking it out and asking Terry some questions.

Just wanted to share that I am now listening to the recording and as previously stated, excellent sound quality. If you are a fan of the previous volumes, you should purchase these unreleased live dates. You can order it directly from the Whailing City Sound website. It shipped and delivered very quickly.

Does Terry tell the story of how he got Wally to record these dates? Were they done for commercial release?

Yes, Norman Granz released 4 albums of the Dream Band, which was not called that at the time. You should ask Terry about the recordings, Wally Heider and how the name Dream Band came about next Saturday during his show. He likes to talk about it.

Listened to this, the first in this series, earlier today. Had the LP but sold it when the CD with a bonus track was released. Only got around to buy the CD second hand last monday. Really an excellent band.

There was a receipt dated june 15, 1991 in the booklet, the original buyer had paid ten Deutschmarks for it. It cost me three Euro plus the same for shipping.

That chart has an underlying aggressiveness that has me wasting to hear it played by a Buddy Rich band. I think it could hold up to the force quite nicely.

The arrangements are mostly Bill Holman and Marty Paich.  I listened to the entire album on youtube and ordered the cd.  Some wonderfully in the pocket stuff in there.  Mel Lewis!

Sounds like Holman, whose writing almost always held up up to a heavier touch.

But I could be wrong.

I only got around to buying Vol. 1 and 2 of the Conteporary LPs of the "Lost Sessions" Dream Band sessions back in the 90s (during a stay in London - had never seen the LPs anywhere else before). But as they were quite pricey I skipped buying subsequent volumes that were in the "Gibbs" bin at Mole Jazz. A mistake, at least for Vol. 3.

Terry Gibbs explains some background on how these records came about in his "Good Vibes" autobiography (recommended reading!). Here is an excerpt and this should answer the questions of Kevin Bresnahan):

 

According to this, Vols. 4 and 5 of the Dream Band recordings are actually reissues of commercially issued records on Verve and Mercury (Discogs confirms this).
I'm tempted to get Vol. 7 now, but at least 22 EUR for one CD? Wait and see ...
