rostasi Posted December 15 Report Posted December 15 Every time I'd seen him, his playing just brought tears to my eyes. Quote

aparxa Posted December 15 Report Posted December 15 Thank you for the music! A riveting performance when I saw him with Shakti near Grenoble about 20 years ago. He made with Lage and Lloyd a lovely session for Blue Note recently. Quote
Stompin at the Savoy Posted December 15 Report Posted December 15 There appears to be some question over whether he has actually died or is just in the hospital in bad shape. Quote
rostasi Posted December 15 Author Report Posted December 15 (edited) I had the chance to see him a few times and it was breathtaking each time. Twice with Shivkumar Sharma, once with U. Srinivas (who died way too young) and once with Nikhil Banerjee. All of them now gone. Memories are there tho. The video below is not that good, but you'll still see and hear the mastery of both: 18 minutes ago, Stompin at the Savoy said: There appears to be some question over whether he has actually died or is just in the hospital in bad shape. Oh! That's interesting... because the news is flooded with info about his death! I hope he makes a full recovery. Any updates about him still being in the hospital are 12 hours old, so we'll have to wait and see what the news is from the family. Maybe someone can put a notice on the title of this - "pending confirmation" or something like that. Edited December 15 by rostasi Quote
mikeweil Posted December 15 Report Posted December 15 (edited) Zakir Hussain and Trilok Gurtu were the two Indian tabla virtuosos who really opened up and transformed traditional Indian percussion. I was lucky of getting to know them either personally (Gurtu) or seeing them perform very closely (both). I hope the news about his passing is not true - no matter what is the truth, I really wish him all the best. https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/tabla-legend-zakir-hussain-critical-we-ask-for-prayers-says-nephew-7255719 Edited December 15 by mikeweil Quote
gvopedz Posted December 16 Report Posted December 16 (edited) Probably the first time I heard Zakir Hussain was in George Harrison's Living in the Material World, maybe 50 years ago. At that time, I had no idea who Zakir Hussain was, but as years went by I became a fan. Edited December 16 by gvopedz Quote

mjazzg Posted December 16 Report Posted December 16 (edited) Charles Lloyd and Tyshawn Sorey are both confirming his death on their social feeds. Great master, I only ever saw him with Lloyd but it was very memorable Edited December 16 by mjazzg Quote
HutchFan Posted December 16 Report Posted December 16 I was hoping to see Hussain perform in March at Big Ears. Alas . . . R.I.P. Quote
