Since the year is coming to an end . . .

What are the albums or artists who really caught your ear in 2024?

New or old releases.  Jazz or other genres.  Recordings or live performances.  As long as you first heard it this year and it's left a lasting impression, it's fair game.

Here's what comes to mind for me, listed in no particular order:

I've especially enjoyed the second LP in this set, originally released as Autumn Song.

A beautiful tribute.  Along with Jimmy Owens, Kenny Barron stars.

This first encounter with Lutoslawski immediately sent me scurrying for more by this Polish composer.

The highlight of this disc is Gilel's transcendent take on Brahms' Ballads, Op. 10.

The Abercrombie-Bergonzi front line -- along with Gertz's excellent compositions -- make this memorable.

Powell at his early-1970s peak -- amazing rhythms & improvisation.

I'd somehow overlooked Morgan's last studio session until this year.  It's a doozy.

Fantastic Latin music with a heavy dose of jazz intermixed, courtesy of pianist and arranger Papo Lucca.

So what about YOU?  Music-wise, what hit you hard in 2024?

Better late than never, the first 4 releases by Dwight Yoakam. Anyone who enjoys Merle Haggard or Buck Owens will find much to enjoy here. My favorite rock release hands down was the Deep Purple release = 1. I found myself playing this to death since it's early summer release. New guitarist Simon McBride has lit a fire under the band and the album is inspired and rocks with that classic Deep Purple sound. It made me feel like a kid again. Even saw them perform in New Hampshire in late August. Great show.

The Bakersfield sound!

I have a couple Yoakam albums from the 90s.  I'll go back and check out those earlier releases.  Thanks for the heads-up.  :tup

Countless remote recordings preserved for posterity by Phil Schaap and bequeathed to the world via Vanderbilt University's aviary web page.

405 total "Live Sound Recordings" to date:

https://aviary.library.vanderbilt.edu/catalog?current_flock=false&f[collection_id_is][]=2137&f[description_type_search_facet_sms][]=Live+sound+recordings&myresources=0&request_is_xhr=false&search_field=advanced&search_type=advance&sort=created_at_ds+desc&update_facets=true&user_ip=173.171.182.128

I am taking albums/artists a little more broadly perhaps, and I am also not even touching  on (as I haven't really gotten to them anyway) but there are 160 recordings under type Interview and I was told this week there are a thousand or more to come.

Dan,

Are there any recordings in particular in the archive that you'd recommend?

There are too many but searching by Franc Williams, Eddie Durham, George Kelly, Sammy Price, Willis (Gator Tail) Jackson, Red Holloway, Barry Harris, Russell Procope, Howard McGhee, Joe Albany, Eddie Chamblee and of course Percy France will yield many excellent performances in (usually) very good sound.

Not to mention The Countsmen, Earle Warren, Buddy Tate, Paul Quinichette, Dicky Wells, Doc Cheatham.

Various Sun Ra things that have come to market this year.

Three Stan Getz "easy listening" records that have relatively trite backings but mostly magnificently melodic readings by Getz:

,* Illuminations

* Didn't We

* What The World Needs Now

The latter two have a lot of Getz playing over pre-recorded tracks, the second one altogether, as it was supposed to be a Wes Montgomery album, but Wes left for A&M before he got to it. Who knew?!?!?

A handful of recent-ish Roscoe Mitchell records.

I dunno, what else? The years are starting to blend together more and more. I don't trust that type of time very much, to be honest.

I loved the first three Yoakam albums at the time. Even got to see him once. We drifted apart as the 90 came along.

I see he released an album this year, I might just have to reacquaint myself
