Kevin Bresnahan Posted December 4 Report Posted December 4 Someone on the Steve Hoffman forums mentioned that he had been trying to register here with no luck. Do any current members know of others trying to register here? If so, PM me their username/e-mail and I'll see if I can get them activated. Quote
sonnymax Posted December 5 Report Posted December 5 Can't wait to welcome these two new members from Hoffman who say such nice things about us: "I realize it's probably on a bit of a decline and its best years were 20 years ago" and: "I can't say I miss seeing certain users act like complete asses. I think what got me to stop visiting for a while was when a critic there who lived in the poshest and wealthiest suburb in the Chicagoland area actually had the nerve to blast certain jazz artists for modeling (and presumably making deals with) fashion designers, as if they're not allowed to have too much success or comfort. Combined with the racial disparity between him and those he was trashing, it just made his garbage all the more off-putting." Quote

I saw that second comment and wondered what the heck he was talking about. I don't remember any conversations about Jazz artists taking to modeling to supplement their income. Does anyone remember this? Quote
rostasi Posted December 5 Report Posted December 5 I'm guessing that it's a reference to something Larry Kart said at some time, but he'll have to fill us in on that if it's something he remembers. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted December 5 Author Report Posted December 5 Larry hasn't been here since June. I hope he's OK but I do wonder if he'll be back after what happened during his last absence from the board. But no matter, who is supposed to have posted it, I don't remember anything about a Jazz artist going into modeling. Which jazz artist? Quote

exponent_of_sock Posted December 5 Report Posted December 5 Sorry for shitting on this forum--it was more in reference to my registration going into a black hole for two months than anything else. To be honest, most of the helpful posts from this forum I've found doing online research for one moldy fig jazz thing or another were from the 2000-2005 era. This place still seems pretty vibrant, though. Glad to be here. I archive and restore jazz (and maybe a few ragtime) records from the 1900-1935 era, mostly 1922-1931. Most of the fans of this stuff seem to be dead, but there are still dozens of us! Quote

I think there are two sorts of members there - (1) audiophiles and (2) music fans in general (obviously with an overlap between them). I'm no audiophile, but I do love music, so I'm in group 2. For me I like hearing discussion about new releases across the spectrum of music, discovering old bands/artists that I didn't know as well when I was younger, and hearing differences of opinions about artists I like. It's usually fairly healthy discussion, and because it's a music in general board, it attracts more members than a jazz-centric board like this. I don't think it's going to change there any time soon, despite bulletin boards being a relic from an earlier digital age. Quote

Most of the fans of this stuff seem to be dead, but there are still dozens of us! It turns out that spammers apply for access here quite often. There are over a thousand accounts awaiting approval. It's really hard to know which applicants are real people and which ones are spam-bots. This is the only reason you didn't get approved. Again, if current posters know someone who wants access here, contact me and I'll see if I can take care of it. Quote
Dan Gould Posted December 6 Report Posted December 6 I thought a system was in place to weed out spam bots - like a couple of jazz related questions or something. Quote
mjazzg Posted December 6 Report Posted December 6 "what year did Mosaic release their Bill Barron box set?" would obviously be one Quote

Brad Posted December 7 Report Posted December 7 I think in recent years someone had to contact Jim to register them. I wonder if it might be easier if Jim S had that ability. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted December 8 Author Report Posted December 8 Jim A gave me the ability to approve these registrations. I recently retired so I told him I have some spare time to help out with stuff like this. I don't know if it's permanent or if he just needed some temporary help. FWIW, I don't think it's worthwhile for anyone to go through over a thousand account applications to determine if they are a spam bot or a real person. I suppose I could compare the IP addresses to see if some of them come from the same block of IPs but knowing what I know, those can be spoofed. There are some applicants with somewhat real names with E-mail addresses that seem to match the chosen username. I am thinking maybe I should E-mail some of these to see if it's a real person but a lot more of them seem like businesses, with business E-mails. I figure those are companies that want to come here and sell their shit. Quote
