who is on that Jimmy Lyons album ?
I heard him only on the Cecil Taylor albums but I am so impressed of his playing there it is incredible. It is the next evolution after Jackie McLean, I mean I could almost say: Bird, Jackie, Lyons if there would have been more exposure to Lyons. Was he too stuck to Taylor ? I read that the first gig Taylor had without Lyons was when Lyons became sick.

I don´t like very much if an alto sounds a bit to "sweet". That´s why I like that reed sound that had started with Bird, I would even say I like McLean´s tone even more ! and Lyons fit´s into that categorie.

I'm in for the Thornton, Kuhn, and Burrell, bought the Bley, Lyons, and Murray in December, already owned the Shepp, AEC, Moncur and Cherry titles.  The Moncur is superb, and the Shepp 'Yasmina' is really strong.

The Joachim Kühn Actuels are both very good.

Paris is Wonderful has some excoriating alto from Mr Kühn, which I do enjoy. But worth being prepared!

Excellent word, though it generally has negative connotations. I briefly thought "coruscating", but that's probably far too positive (although one definition is "scathing").

Youtube here.

I dig the album, but it's extremely free and the alto (in places) brings to mind performers such as Akira Sakata. 😉

It also includes the under-recorded (IMO) bassist Jean-François "J.F." Jenny-Clark. :tup

I think of it as tearing/ripping, though it can also mean to harry or denounce.

regardless, it’s a fun album!

Yes, CDjapan came through with a timely coupon! I ordered a bunch 2 days ago, 8 BYG reissues plus one other.

Five CTI's and three BYG's for me.

I’d love to go back in time just a little bit to when I was first becoming aware of the Actuel LPs and hoovering them up in the late 1990s. It was a really fun experience to hear them fresh without the benefit of YouTube or other digital media platforms.

I went that route and got an LP copy of Other Afternoons last weekend without playing it before... It's awesome, a Cyrille master class...
