felser Posted December 21, 2024 Report Posted December 21, 2024 I received the Bley, Lyons, Murray, and have played the Bley - very happy with the SQ given the usual SQ of the original recordings on the BYG-Actuel label. Quote
romualdo Posted yesterday at 05:37 AM Report Posted yesterday at 05:37 AM (edited) new batch of BYG-Actuel CD releases via Solid Japan coming late March (25) - It's the next 10 from the original 52 releases (69-72) Acting Trio, Braxton (B-Xo/N-0-1-4-7a), Cyrille (What About), Joachim Kuhn (Sounds Of Feelings), Shepp (Blase), Coursil (Way Ahead), Burrell (Echo), Moncur (New Africa), Terroade (Love Rejoice), Thornton (Ketchaoua). Many of these have not had official/legit CD releases AFAIK. Some choice stuff in there - wondering how many of these will be released via the recent BYG reissue program - they see to be much more selective plus what is the relationship between the current BYG & Solid releases, if any - nothing on the Hoffman site regarding this. https://diskunion.net/jazz/ct/list/0/0/137098/0/0/0/10/0/2 Thornton's Ketchaoua is also being released next month (Feb) via the official BYG site https://bygrecords.bandcamp.com/album/ketchaoua is it worth modifying the title of this thread to new BYG-Actuel releases or should I commence a new thread? jlhoots Posted yesterday at 02:19 PM Report Posted yesterday at 02:19 PM I ordered the Lyons from Amazon. Supposed to come from Japan. Never showed up. Never was charged either. Received an e-mail about supply chain problems. Quote

Thanks for this info. This involves some work for me. 😁 How many of these do I want? If just a few, Dusty Groove is cheaper net of shipping; if above a certain number (which requires calculation and navigating the clunky CDjapan website), CDjapan winds up cheaper. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted yesterday at 03:36 PM Report Posted yesterday at 03:36 PM All of those are excellent, excellent records. I think the Acting Trio is a real sleeper, though it is very "out" in a European, non-idiomatic sense. Quote
mjazzg Posted yesterday at 04:05 PM Report Posted yesterday at 04:05 PM Acting Trio scared me witless about 35 years ago, bet I'd like it today. Coursil, Moncur and Terroade are the ones for me on that list but have LPs of each which I'll stick with Quote
colinmce Posted yesterday at 04:09 PM Author Report Posted yesterday at 04:09 PM Don't sleep on these if you want them. I didn't manage to get a copy of the Lyons and it looks like it's not really around anymore. I can survive, I have pretty much all the free jazz titles save a couple. I would be very interested in the Frank Wright on CD though. Quote
J.A.W. Posted yesterday at 04:13 PM Report Posted yesterday at 04:13 PM Got the Lyons a while ago from CDJapan and hated the sound, way too loud for my liking. The old needledrop I have sounds better. Quote
felser Posted yesterday at 04:24 PM Report Posted yesterday at 04:24 PM Moncur's 'New Africa' is my pick of that label's output by a mile. Also, Shepp's 'Yasmina, A Black Woman', the other Moncur, and the Arthur Jones are all really good. Quote

I have all of the Actuels as originals and sound varies as does pressing quality, so needle drop is not exactly a guarantee here. Kinda shocks me that no Frank Wright is currently in print on CD (though the ESP stuff, incl. Moers & Ali's Alley, is "around"). Criminally under-sung saxophonist, and both the band with Noah Howard and with Alan Silva are tremendous. Quote
T.D. Posted yesterday at 05:31 PM Report Posted yesterday at 05:31 PM Thanks for the suggestions. The March 25 batch doesn't show on CDJapan site yet. Some of the first 12 are still in stock, though. Hard indeed to believe no Frank Wright currently in print. 😢 Quote

I would love to see the enter COTW discography in a CD box set with good notation. Wouldn't end up being that large, maybe 5-6 discs. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted yesterday at 07:19 PM Report Posted yesterday at 07:19 PM yeah. The Fractal issues are even hard to find now, and did include extra tracks. There's also a bunch of very enjoyable live/radio boots kicking around. Looks like the "Your Prayer" album is in print on vinyl, though the cover art scan is not so good. Haven't heard it so I don't know whether it is a quality pressing (have an original which sounds great). Quote

There's also an unissued date with Burton Greene in for Bobby Few that I'd like to hear, and I suppose the two tracks with Wright, Few, and Ali on the Hans Dulfer LP could be added -- they're super.
