Those sites need lots of attention and time. True discographers are an endangered species.

Lets hope Tom Lord survives (with some help from us)

I thought this should go in this subforum. This is terrible news and I can't imagine why the site is being shuttered.  Great resource.

Truly awful news - have been using this for years

By the end of this year, this chat board will have been in operation for just under 28 years.  And yes, there are some who have been part of it for the whole time.  So why discontinue it, and why announce it ahead of time?

I am rapidly closing in on 80 years old, and in the past couple of years have had some major health issues.  It is inevitable that this site will close some day.  But I would rather it be done in an orderly way, rather than the chaos if one day everybody showed up and the board was gone without notice.

Having someone “take over” the chat board is just not practicable for a number of reasons.  Others may want to start a follow-on chat board, and I’m giving space here for others to publicize where that board might be. I am happy that I was able to make this board and the discography section available to all cost free and without ads.

Also, the early announcement will allow anyone the chance to copy any information they want to save.

I’d like to say some things about the people who use this board.  I am proud of you.  You allowed this board to be a “family-friendly” place without flames or obscenities that often are found elsewhere.

But even more I am proud of the group here who developed DES.  This is the place where that started and this is the place where unbelievable advances in technology allowed mono recordings to be heard in stereo – not rechanneled stereo, but true multichannel separation.  I brag all the time on “my guys” who have achieved such wonders.  Little did I know in 1978 (46 years ago!) When I wrote the first Goldmine articles about rock and roll in stereo that a pipe dream such as DES would one day become a reality.

And thanks to all those who helped others identify mystery songs.  There has never been a group that is so good and talented at doing that.  And thanks to those who keep us all up to date on happenings in the music world.

All our lives are divided into different seasons.  The season of my life devoted to music has been exhilarating and wonderful, but seasons come to an end.  What’s in the future?  Well, I intend to keep the discographies section up and will hopefully update it from time to time (as well as working with friends on other discography sites).  If follow-on chat boards happen, I hope to participate as I can.

Finally, a sincere thanks to everyone who has participated in this chat board.  It’s been a pleasure.

Mike
