LAL
Right! Some of us have posted confessions on our CD binges in various (many!) threads, how we're buying far more than we can listen to, how it's 'hurting' our finances or relationship with the spouse, how the discs are taking up too much space at home etc. For the benefit of CD-junkies like myself, can BB members who have kicked the habit suggest some ways to cut down on buying? How do you resist the urge? Do you have a tried and tested strategy to share? Off the top, I can think of some ideas such as... - Cut up the credit cards. - Stop visiting Jazz BBs/Stop surfing the internet. - Avoid bricks & mortar record stores like the plaque. - Meditate or find religion. - Watch plenty of reality TV shows. - Handcuff/tie ourselves to a heavy object everytime there's an urge to buy. - Let the spouse keep a tight lid on the finances. Matthew
How I keep myself in check is buying with cash only. Even when I use a credit card, I make myself have the cash in hand before I order. Even have a place where I keep my "music money". This way, I avoid running up the credit card.
Jazzmoose
Isn't asking that question here kind of like going to a Klan meeting to ask about how we can encourage diversity and tolerance?
wesbed
I say... buy, buy, buy till you feel so guilty that you can make yourself stop (if only for a while).

Dan Gould
How does one refrain from buying CDs? I offered this in one of the other threads. Its somewhat complicated, but its definitely worked for me: Buy a house with a mortgage you can barely afford.
Hardbopjazz
How to stop buying CD', try LP's instead. Start listening to music you don't like and this will prevent you from wanting to listen to music for a while. I don't know of any real way. Buying jazz CD's is like a heroin fix for me. But the high doesn't last that long, and then I need more.
A Lark Ascending
Why bother stopping? If you can afford to eat, live, provide for your family and your retirement, make the donations you think appropriate and still have some spare cash why not buy CDs? Unless you want to use the money for other things like fine wine, wallpaper, cocaine, fast cars conservatories etc. Or be 'sensible' and hoard it where you'll never get to enjoy what you worked for. Claude
Here are my tips for mild CD buying addictions: - stop checking jazzmatazz or other "new releases" websites, unsubscribe from CD store newsletters. You won't miss essential new releases if you browse this board, but you will avoid some completist-only purchases - before ordering a CD, check your collection for albums from the same artist and ask yourself if your have already listened seriously to all those CDs. - make some order in your collection. You will find many CDs you haven't listened to for a long time, that will take you over the next weeks. You will also find CDs that you don't like anymore and you can exchange them in second hand stores (which often have a 2-for-1 exchange policy) or sell them on Ebay, enabling you to buy new CDs without spending new money. - listen to jazz radio

When shopping for cds I try and hold myself to a limit, sometimes that works, and other times...., the damn things keep calling my name. Who am I to disappoint the little guys? Cds need love too! tjobbe
I tried setting a limit when buying with credit card... it really works but only the first time... when you buy the second time and set it 25$, nothing happened... and the third time,.. the forth time,......this stupid card never stops me.... Cheers, Tjobbe P.S. I managed it to stop once, but then the other card said.. use me

I have tried all of them at one time or another. Unfortunately, my addiction is twofold - (1) impulsive purchasing of CDs and LPs and (2) obsessive trading of unofficial live recordings. When I have one somewhat under control I am usually overly active in the other. I think my overall problem is an inability to control my constant desire for new music. doubleM
Sublimate your addictive cd buying into a more appropriate activity, like....porn! J/K. Maybe try something like a reinforcement schedule, one goal met= one cd. Sounds boring, but it works for some people. Also, the idea of driving by the record store, avoiding the online sites and sales can be a strength builder. Once you get through the hard part (not buying for a while), try listening to what you have really attentively, and you'll start to see what a great collection you're already sitting on! scottb
I'm just the opposite about cash. Money in my wallet is as good as spent anyway so why not spend it on CDs. Cash purchases are under the radar as far as my wife is concerned and they don't get counted toward my CD budget. (I'm getting a strong urge to head to the ATM as we speak.)
