Can anyone else confirm that? I have certainly read that too in the last few years.

Kevin Bresnahan
I saw Roy quite a few times over the years. The earliest shows, in the mid-90s were pretty damn incredible. Thanks for the music Roy.

Yes, I was aware about this, when I posted my thing. But somehow, if a musician does not play anymore and there is no hope of a comeback, it´s hard for me to think about him. I practically "lived" 5 years with the hope, that Miles would have a comeback, and he had, and I lived with the hope that Monk will perform again, and he did not ...... 13 hours ago, JSngry said: Did he also play with Bud too? There was more people who had played with Bud than many imagine. For example there is a very fine set of Bud with Zoot Sims..... I must admit I have not heard the name Gene di Novi yet..... 7 hours ago, Kevin Bresnahan said: I saw Roy quite a few times over the years. I always play it in super up tempo with the Coltrane Changes, I can imagine that Roy Haynes also played it very very fast......
Ken Dryden
I don't think I ever got to hear Roy Haynes in person, but I do remember what a snappy dresser he was when he attended IAJE. He was a fun interview and I've got lots of his recordings as a leader and sideman.

The thing that sticks in my mind the first few times I saw him live, was when he ended a drum solo with a hi-hat solo that went on and on. It was fun but a bit over the top. My ears were not happy by the end. In fact, the second time I saw him do it, I covered my ears for most of it. The weirdest thing about the last two times I saw him was him singing "The Gambler", and getting the crowd to join in.
Holy Ghost
That's nearly a century of playing drums from Charlie Parker to Andrew Hill and beyond. What a life!
ejp626
RIP. What a legacy! I saw him once in NYC in the early 2000s and then again in Chicago in 2007. There may have been another time, but that's likely it.
mjzee
The one time I saw him was participating in a panel discussion on Mingus, sitting next to Nat Hentoff. Spiffy dresser.
JSngry
He went back to Luis Russell! Caught him at a clinic/performance at UNTwith his quartet of the time, Ricardo Strobert, Marcus Fiorillo, and an electric bassist whose name I don't remember. Roy was driving the band hard, and if the other players were having to work really hard to keep up, hey, dues being paid.

medjuck Posted yesterday at 04:44 PM Report Share Posted yesterday at 04:44 PM The LA Times just ran an obit by Don Heckman who died a few years ago! https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/music/story/2024-11-12/roy-haynes-dead-jazz-drummer-band-leader-
AndreyHenkin
I write advance obits for The New York Times. Most are done long before the person dies—some updating done as needed—so the fact an author of one may die first is not unusual.
