GA Russell Posted November 12 Report Share Posted November 12 RIP Roy Haynes! I saw him twice. The first at the Village Vanguard with Monk in January of '69. The second in the spring of '70 at a DC Left Bank Jazz Society show with the group which soon after released an album called Hip Ensemble. Great show! Memorable! My feeling about Roy Haynes has always been this: I'll let the experts decide how good he was. All I know is that I like every album I've heard that he is on. It was August 23, 1970. Ira kept joking that Roy's name had been "typo-ed" in the NY Times - he kept addressing him as Hag-nes. Roy was an absolute legend, and I did get see him live--he must have been pushing 90 and his playing could pass for 25! A man to be mentioned in the same breath with Max, Art, and Elvin.
