Found out when I turned on the radio and heard an (obviously previous prepared) obit on NPR.  Glad I got to see him a few years ago.  Anyone else left who played with Bird?

RIP Roy Haynes!

I saw him twice.  The first at the Village Vanguard with Monk in January of '69.

The second in the spring of '70 at a DC Left Bank Jazz Society show with the group which soon after released an album called Hip Ensemble.  Great show!  Memorable!

My feeling about Roy Haynes has always been this:  I'll let the experts decide how good he was.  All I know is that I like every album I've heard that he is on.

Had the pleasure of having dinner with Roy Haynes along with Dexter Gordon, Red Rodney and Ira Gitler after one of Joe Segal's "Charlie Parker Month" celebrations. It was August 23, 1970. Ira kept joking that Roy's name had been  "typo-ed" in the NY Times - he kept addressing him as Hag-nes.

Some material was issued on this -

R.I.P.

What a great player.  Roy was an absolute legend, and I did get see him live--he must have been pushing 90 and his playing could pass for 25!

A man to be mentioned in the same breath with Max, Art, and Elvin.

I loved his collaborations with the late great Chick Corea.

Ok, I gotta ask - where and what did you all eat?

And did Roy change out of his gig clothes, and if so, into what?

Not sure of a wardrobe change between afternoon and evening show.

Memory says we all walked a block or 2 to a Mexican restaurant on Lincoln Avenue.

So you walked back after dinner. Healthy!

This one really hurts.

Will treasure the many times I saw him live including my first ever visit to Blue Note in NYC.

Adieu Roy.
